Billies POV

The flight back to LA was long. Taylor slept beside me for pretty much the entire flight, stirring every so often in her sleep and mumbling things I couldn't understand. I would brush loose strands off her face and kiss her forehead every time she began to stir.
Since I didn't have any bags or anything, once we'd landed it didn't take us too long to leave the airport and make it to the hospital.
I sat in the waiting area with Brooke and Finn while Taylor was was in the hospital room with her Dad. The nurse had informed us that he had been in surgery late last night but had since woken up just before we arrived about an hour ago.
I sighed as I leaned back into my chair and looked up at the dim lighting in the waiting room.
"Yo I'm gonna go check out the cafeteria for something to eat. Want to come?" Brooke spoke softly as she got up from her seat. Finn got stood up with her, stretching his long limbs.
"Nah man, I think I should stay here in case Tay comes back." I said back, yawning and rubbing my eyes
"Bil, you should eat something" Finn chimed in.
"Fine. If they have burritos or nachos or somethin can you bring me some back? I want to stay here though" I shrugged my shoulders tiredly
"Okay, we'll be back soon" Brooke spoke, grabbing Fins hand and pulling him along with her toward the cafeteria
I watched the clock slowly tick by. It was agonizing not knowing exactly what was going on and I worried for Taylor.
I let my eyes close as I leaned back into my chair.
"Excuse me are you Billie" I heard a woman's voice speak
My eyes flashed open. A nurse stood by the receptionists desk and was looking at me.
"Yes that's me" I said as I stood up and walked towards her
"Your girlfriend is asking for you. Room 23B down the hall" she gestured to the double doors that lead to a long corridor of patients rooms.
I nodded as I made my way the doors, pushing through them and heading down the long corridor until I found room 23B.
I stopped at the door and looked through the little glass window to see Taylor sitting in a chair beside the man in the hospital bed that must be her Dad. He was smiling at her tiredly as he held her hand on the bed.
I gently pushed the door open and walked in.
"Hi" I whispered
"Hey. Um Dad, I want you to meet someone. This is my girlfriend, Billie" she spoke as she looked between both of us and smiled sweetly at me
"Hi, Mr Marshall. It's lovely to meet you. How are you feeling?" I wasn't really sure what to say at a time like this but I felt like that was the right question to ask right now.
"Please call me Ed. I've heard a lot about you Billie" he spoke softly and his voice was tired and groggy but gentle. He smiled at me as he slowly sat up in the hospital bed. "She's as beautiful as you described Taylor " he side eyed his daughter and winked, chuckling roughly as Taylor rolled her eyes at him and smiled
I took a seat in the chair beside Taylor. I could definitely see that Taylor took a lot after her Dad. Same strong jawline and nose and their smiles were also very similar. Ed's blonde hair was shaggy and his skin was tan and leather-like. Even though he was laying down in the hospital bed I could tell he was broad and tall. Definitely a dominant gene that Taylor got from him.
"Can I get you anything to eat or drink Ed?" I asked him politely
"Oh that's very sweet of you! You're very kind Billie" he smiled and turned to Taylor "I like this one already" he whispered to her with a wink as Taylor rolled her eyes and huffed sarcastically at him as she fought a smile. Classic Dad behaviour trying to embarrass his Daughter haha
"I'll take a coffee if that's okay sweetheart" he smiled sweetly at me
"Of course! What about you Tay? You really should eat something" I spoke as I rubbed comforting circles on Taylor's back as Ed watched us smiling tiredly. I turned to look at him again and smiled. I could see there was a sadness in his eyes, obviously since his wife just freakin died and he was in hospital, but he still managed to keep it together.
"I'm not really that hungry babe but a coffee would be good" she spoke tiredly and yawned into her hand
"Okay, I'll be right back." I kissed her cheek as I got up and headed for the door before stopping and turning back to face Taylor's Dad "And Ed, I know it's not great circumstances, but it's lovely to finally meet you" I said to him and gave him a little smile
"It's lovely to meet you too Billie. I'm really glad Taylor has you" he nodded and spoke sincerely
I smiled again before walking out of the room and down the corridor.

Taylor's POV

"She's great Taylor, honestly. I like her already" Dad said once Billie left the room
"Yeah she's incredible Dad" I smiled into my lap as I leaned back into my chair, feeling my cheeks burn slightly
"You're different when you're with her. In a good way though. You look happy kid" he spoke as he reached for my hand again and smiled
"That's because I am happy. I've never felt like this before" my lips pinched as I looked up to meet his eyes as I squeezed his hand in mine
"Your Mom would be so proud Taylor" he smiled proudly but I could see the sadness build up in his eyes as he spoke of Mom
"She wouldn't have approved Dad. We both know that." I felt myself sink a little, believing his comment about Mom being proud.
"Honey. I know it's hard to believe after everything that happened, but she loved you so much... and she was so proud of you. She wrote you a letter not too long ago and planned on giving it to you the next time she saw you. She was never very good with words which is why she wrote it. But I have it here. It's in my bag over there" he pointed to the satchel bag that was on the floor in the corner of the room.
I stood up and walked over to the bag, reaching inside and rummaged around until I found an envelope.
I pulled it out slowly and stared at my name written in her handwriting on the front of the envelope. My hands were shaking.
I slowly walked back to my seat with the envelope and sat down. I looked up at Dad who was watching me with tired eyes and nodded at me.
I gently tore the top of the envelope and pulled out the piece of paper that was folded in three.
I cleared my throat as I began to read the letter softly in my head.

My darling Daughter,

I know I haven't always been good Mother to you. I feel like I've missed out on so many things that have happened in your life and so much growth that you've been through and that's entirely my own fault. I've had a lot of time to think about why I acted the way I did and I can't excuse it. No child should ever be turned away from their parent for being who they are and I am so sorry for being such a monster to you and putting you through that. I now understand and know that it was never a choice for you to be gay, it's part of who you are. My gorgeous girl, I love all of you just the way you are, and all I want is for you to be happy. I hope that one day you will allow me to be part of your life and when you meet someone special, I hope that you will bring her over to meet me. I want to be in your life sweetie, and I want to be there as you make it  through the biggest milestones in life like getting married, having kids, all of it. I love the idea of having a shopping day out with my future daughter in law, whoever that may be, and getting to know her and being the supportive Mom I should've been from the moment you came out to your father and I.

I'm so proud of you Taylor. You're a better person than I could ever dream to be.
I understand that it may take some time, but you know where to find me if and when you're ready to talk about this
I love you unconditionally my beautiful girl
