Madeline went to work as usual pretty early and followed by Emily, none of their bosses were there. Eleanor was in Italy and Wren didn't come. Madeline's desk phone rang.
"Hello, Clermont office with you... Mm-hmm... Alright... But she isn't here today... Can I take a message?... Okay... You're welcome" She hung up and stood up. "Emily, do you have the contract?"
"Oh! Yes, it's right here" She held it up in her hand.
"Thank you" She grabbed her bag. "I have to go to Wren's house, she needs to sign the contract today. Did Eleanor sign it?"
"Yeah, she did before catching her plane. Probably Wren forgot about it or something"
"Well, I must go and I hope I'll see you at lunch"
"You will" She waved at her as she stepped into the elevator.
She took a cab and arrived at Wren's house and rang the doorbell but no answer, she rang it again and waited for a minute but no answer, she tried calling her but only the sound of beeping was there.
"Maybe she has a spare key" She looked under the door mat but no key.
"If I were you, where would I hide it?"
She found a concrete rock on the grass beside the door and she bent down, lifting up the rock and found the key.
"Clever as always Wren" She smiled at herself and opened the door.
The house was quiet like it was haunted, she heard no voice, no sound just her own breathing and her heels echoing through the house.
"Wren?" She called. "It's me Madeline... I came because you have to sign the contract today"
No reply, she found the door of the bedroom half opened and she saw a body on the bed but couldn't see clearly. She opened the door and saw something that made her froze in her place, Wren sleeping on her back and her shirt was completely unbuttoned revealing her toned body and an empty bottle of whiskey on the floor beside her bed. She stepped closer to the side of the bed and took a look at Wren who was sleeping and her chest was rising and falling in rhythm. She looked in her purse for an aspirin and grabbed a glass of water from the kitchen and placed them on the night stand. She found herself moving the hair away from Wren's face caressing her cheeks softly to see her calm features and that made her stir a little.
"Wren?... Wren, wake up"
She shook her gently and finally Wren started to wake up blinking but grimaced from the headache.
"Here" Madeline handed her the pill and the glass of water and she took them without a word and swallowed the pill. "You'll feel better now"
She sat properly on the bed leaning her back against the headboard closing her eyes and looking upwards, hoping the headache would go away.
"No offense but what are you doing here?" she asked painfully.
"There is a contract that needs to be signed and delivered today"
She nodded. "Hand it over"
She gave her the paper and pen, she signed it and handed it back to Madeline.
"You should stop drinking" she said not looking at her.
"Why do you care?" she asked a bit harsh.
"... Because by keeping doing this you could lose yourself or be an addict" She stated.
"It's not important! It doesn't matter anyway" She scoffed.
"No it is!!" she said with a tad of anger and concern in her voice.
