"Bye Rose." My classmate waved at me as I got out of the bus.
Today was boring. The first day in a new class, and new teachers, I couldn't wait to get home. My mum must have made my favourite meal, but wouldn't serve me until I've had my bath.Sometimes, I wonder how cool it would have been if I had siblings, like anyone at all. Maybe it would have been more lively and fun. I have little cousins, Sister Tayo's children, but it's absurd if they live with us.
Getting down from the bus, I saw the house gate opened. That was unusual; what could be wrong?
I walked through the gate and I found the gateman on the floor, I called him but he didn't answer. I thought he was drunk as usual. Getting to the living room I met my father on the floor. It took me time to get to where he was. What's happening? I said to myself.
Oh my Godness!” I shouted.
He was shot.
Dad! Dad!! Dad!!!” I called him louder than I imagined."He's dead!" My subconscious added.
I felt weak, I couldn't move my legs, it was like the earth paused. Immediately I heard a faint voice calling me.
“Rose”
Mom” I recovered and ran to the bedroom, where her voice was coming from.“Rose” my daughter”
She was on the bed and I could see she was wounded, but I didn't mind, as long as she could speak."Mom, what happened? Did robbers attack the house? Let me call Sister Tayo."
"Dad is not answering even the gateman is on the floor, what happened, mom?”
“I don't have much time,” she said giving me that awkward look she gave me in the morning.
It was when I realized the meaning of what she said that I saw tears coming down my cheeks, now I knew what the look was all about.“Take this” She removed a key from her wig. I was surprised but I couldn't ask why she hid it there.
“I can't explain but I hope you figure it out,” she said weakly.
“ Figure what out mum?” I asked. Now I could hear myself cry.
"Don't cry Rose?” she said smiling.
“Protect this key and do not tell anyone, when the time comes you'll know the importance of it”“I'm done with all this key nonsense. Let me call sister Tayo” I said with confidence like she's the solution to all this.
“The key was ggggiiivvvveen” she started coughing.
I rushed to get her phone but I realized I don't even know where it is.
“Where's your phone mom” The room went silent that I could hear my heartbeat.
She's dead. My subconscious slowly added.
“Mom" I called her like I usually do and scratched my head.“Mom!" I called her softly again.
“Mom!!" This time it was louder! No Response, then I started laughing, I laughed so hard but my laughter gradually changed to cry.
I walked to the living room where my father was, I saw his phone on the couch.
And I dialed the first number on his call log, which was his colleague's and when he picked the call; all I could say was “they are dead”Mr. Shola was my dad's colleague, they worked together in the same company.
“Who is dead”? He asked.“Who is this ?! He asked further.
“Rose,” I said, not wanting to say any other word.
“Come over” please” the tears rolled down my cheeks faster than I expected.
“Ok,” he said unsure of what was happening.
