Hello, my fellow Dragon Riders. I know this seems a little random, but the promo for Dragons: Rescue Riders just came out and I decided to check it out and then post an update concerning this new series for HTTYD. I was actually in the middle of writing an article about crossovers, but this came up and I decided to write a quickie article on this.
To be honest, I was shocked — SHOCKED! — when I saw this, and heard about this. I couldn't believe my eyes . . . and ears. This is probably the worst idea DreamWorks has done for this franchise since either the Book of Dragons or the comics — or BOTH!
This looks NOTHING like the beloved HTTYD Franchise that we all know and love. I get it that it's for preschoolers, but isn't it a little insulting? There aren't as many preschoolers in the audience who watch HTTYD as much as older kids and teenagers (and those of us adults who can't let go of a good thing). Not only are the graphics really . . . preschool-y (to the point that it looks like I'm watching a living, breathing realm of Playmobil), but the dragons don't even look like any of the dragons we recognize in the franchise. And the kids? They're not even the Gang! Why didn't they just preschool-ify the Gang and the dragons and everything, instead of giving us new . . . well, everything?! There's nothing that's familiar! None! And if these kids were raised by a dragon, then why do they still act like humans? Whoever wrote this obviously didn't read Book 8 "How to Break a Dragon's Heart" of the HTTYD book series by Cressida Cowell that shows us what a human raised by a dragon looks, sounds, and acts like.
I'm not trying to turn this into a rant article, but how many of you, besides me, were expecting Dragons: Rescue Riders to be about the Gang, and set to bridge HTTYD 2 and HTTYD 3 together — like how Dragons: Race to the Edge bridged HTTYD 1/Riders of Berk/Defenders of Berk and HTTYD 2 together? I was excited! I wanted to see how the Gang got their dragon armor, the development of Hiccup and Astrid's relationship, their fights with Drago's Warlords, the rebuilding of Berk, Snotlout's hero-worship of Valka, Valka's curious liking for Eret, the gradual growth of Hiccup as he adjusts to the role of a chief, the still-continued and unnecessary love triangle between Snotlout/Ruffnut/Fishlegs — and maybe even the re-emergence of some of our favorite OCs like Dagur, Heather, Mala, and others. Am I the only one who wanted all of this to happen?
You have no idea how disappointed I was to hear that Dragons: Rescue Riders would have nothing to do with anything concerning HTTYD, or the Gang, or the franchise as a whole. With the franchise coming to an end, I was hoping that we would end it off with the series bridging the last two films and give some backstory into it — and into the Warlords as well. Now, we shall have none of it.
I wish somebody could write a story that would cover this so that we could have some "closure". Maybe someday if I ever get better at writing (and with lots of time to outline the route of the storyline) I might just write it myself and try to write it in the direction that DreamWorks could've taken if it had done it. But that's a big "if" and a big "when."
Anyway, I'm done with this article. What do you guys think about this new series? Tell me what you think. I'm always eager to chat with my fellow Dragon Riders. ^_^
Have a great and productive week, everyone. I should come back in another few days with another article. See you then!
Long Live the Night!
