Cortisol is best known for it's role in a person's Fight-or-Flight instinct. (It's a steroid hormone that's produced in the Adrenal Cortex.)

This (as well as Adrenalin) affect a person's Parasympathetic Nervous System (which mainly conserves energy)

It's produced when a person comes in contact with stressors in their life.

It increases a person's energy—hence why some people get super wired when stressout— Regulates a person's blood pressure— and controls your sleep/wake cycle—it also controls how the body uses stuff like carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. (It makes the body conserve them, that's why if you've been stressed out for a while u tend to pack on the pounds)

There's two kind of stress, Eustress (which is like normal stress and is actually considered good for the body) and Distress (negative stress)

Cortisol production is higher when the subject is under distress.

Various issues can develop if a person is continually under distress and cortisol is being over produced (but I won't go into that unless y'all want me to, sorry I just really like psychology and think it's neat. Please ignore this update lol)

(I have sources if anyone wants them)
