Chapter 44: Klaus: I don't know how to say goodbye.
Caroline: Try this. One of you stands, walks to the door, and doesn't turn back. Even if their heart aches for just one more look. One more moment. But you'll know that the not looking just means.. I'll never forget you." - THE ORIGINALS
My hands shook as I turned the door knob, and a pained smile plastered on my face as it opened. The passcode of the first door was our anniversary date and for the main door it was the day we first met.
I looked around his huge house. Tears glistened in my eyes. He stayed true to his promises. Ang pagkaka-disenyo ng bahay ay katulad ng pinag-usapan namin noon. There was a pool, and a basketball court. I could still recall the night he told me that he wanted us to have our own basketball team. A tear rolled down my cheek with the memory.
My back straightened as I heard his footsteps. I took a deep breath then turned to look at him. Pababa siya ng hagdan. Bihis na bihis na siya at mukhang paalis. Natigilan siya ng makita ako.
"Sandy.." His forehead creased. "What are you doing here?"
Tears filled my eyes.
"What do you wanna know?" I asked, faking calmness while staring at the pool. I was stunned and my mind went blank when I saw her in the middle of the living room. Dinala ko siya dito sa labas ng sabihin niya na may gusto siyang malaman.
"Everything. Start with Addie."
"What is there to know about Addie? You know everything."
"That day I saw you two together at the restaurant.. Ano yung totoo?"
I knew this is where it was headed. I asked myself whether I should still answer her questions and if so, what for? But one look in her eyes, and I just gave in. I sighed.
"I didn't know that mom was meeting her that day, and when I did it was already too late, I tried calling you but you weren't answering my calls."
"Why didn't you explain your side?"
I smirked. "You didn't exactly give me a chance to do that, remember?" I said with sarcasm.
"You should've tried harder," she said in a small voice.
"What for?" I muttered bitterly, glancing at her. "Nothing I say would make you believe me that day. You had already made up your mind that you couldn't trust me."
"That's not true!"
I stared at her. "Look me in the eye and tell me that I was wrong."
She looked away. Her silence said it all and that hurt. I knew from the start that I never got her trust back but f*ck, it didn't hurt less. The last time we saw each other was still painfully vivid in my mind. It was tormenting; her crying while hurling painful words at me. I had to take a deep breath as I felt the tightening in my chest for the memory was so vivid.
