The sun was making its bed atop the mountains, its once scorching rays now but a gentle stream of light as the mighty star began ceasing its work for the day. True Cross Academy's work was far to be done, however, as the numerous search parties tracked the areas within a perimeter of Emi's last sighting.
A pair of electric blue eyes skidded wildly throughout the groups of people, trying his best to read facial expressions from his place by the window of Mephisto's office. His shoes slapped the floor below him at an erratic rhythm as he, for the hundredth time that day, turned desperately toward the demon king of time.
Before he could utter words, however, Mephisto cut him sternly.
"No."
"They've been looking in the same damn places! Please, just let me-"
"No, Amaimon. I'll be in big trouble if the Order finds out you're still alive. For the safety of both of us, you will not go outside while the search parties are deployed."
Mephisto, in an attempt to contain his raging brother, had cast a spell around the office, forcing every door, window and possible escape route shut. A low, frustrated growl pushed past Amaimon's teeth as he turned once more towards the window, his hand unconsciously coming up to his mouth where he started biting at the tips of his black fingernails.
"And please, revert to your animal form. You're easier to spot this way."
"Its like they're not even trying to find her!" Amaimon grunted. "You said they're keeping Okumura inside his dorm and not letting him look. He's the most qualified out of all of them!"
"Amaimon." Mephisto warned.
With a roll of his eyes Amaimon's body was enveloped in smoke, slowly dissipating until revealing a small piece of green fluff in its place.
"We'll never find her at this rate, you know." The demon king of earth sighed, hoisting his tiny body to the top of the desk to where he continued his watch.
"Just give it time." Mephisto whispered, his green gaze following Amaimon's as they both stared at the scattered groups of search parties.
It had been days since Emi was last seen, and although Mephisto didn't want to admit it, he was starting to grow nervous. Not to mention, the Order was backing him against a wall, and Amaimon's unstable behavior was close to setting him off.
"Emi hasn't left the barrier yet." Mephisto mumbled. "She's around here somewhere."
~~
"Oh dear."
Darkness had been the only thing Emi had perceived in, she didn't know how long. A deep sense of nothingness, not even a pinch of color swimming through her vision as her ears were trained to listen.
To the soft dripping of a leak in the roof at some corner of the room. At the old floorboards creaking each time her chest rose. At each and every vibration coming from her captor's throat as they spoke, the sound light and airy in the humidity of the room.
"This isn't very amusing. Shouldn't have your friends found you by now?" A deep sigh reached Emi's ears.
"The medicine is almost done setting in. They better be here by then."
Medicine?
The edges of her mouth were stained with dry saliva and blood from where the tightness of the gag had lacerated. She couldn't even feel her own tongue thanks to the pressure it had been submitted to. All the same with her wrists and ankles which had turned purple with bruises.
Whatever they had been force feeding her had been boiling inside her stomach for days now, and the only thing preventing her from throwing up was the fear of whatever consequences that could bring, because she couldn't handle any more suffering. Every minute that passed made her steadily feel the loss of her sanity. She could do nothing about it.
"Well, they've taken enough time to find you." The voice sighed and the girl picked up on the sound of steps crossing the room.
"Let's begin, shall we?"
Before Emi could so much as tense her muscles, she felt a sharpness pressing against the side of her neck, and liquid being pushed inside her body.
Having lost the ability to scream, she could all but whimper as the liquid burned its way into her blood stream, sending her into a frenzy of shivers and twitches she could not control.
"There we go. That wasn't so bad." The voice cooed, but Emi could barely hear as all her remaining strength gathered to combat the intense pain that the liquid caused her body.
"And now, we wait."
~~
"They're done already?!" Amaimon growled. Two hours had passed, the sun long set as now the stars twinkled above the search parties as they gathered around, collectively packing their stuff.
"They're human. They can't see in the dark." Mephisto sighed, standing right next to the green haired male who had practically destroyed his nails from chewing on them.
"Thats why they have lanterns." Amaimon protested, not taking his eyes off the window. "Emi could be suffering right now. She could be fighting for her life. And they're worried about the dark."
Mephisto took a slow gaze across the room, containing himself from feeling the desperate energy his brother irradiated. His teeth clenched, a gloved hand coming up to thread across the hair at the top of his head as he closed his eyes and wracked his brain for a possible solution.
"Amaimon..." Mephisto sighed, opening his eyes and watching as the last of the groups vacated the area, all going back to their camp stations to wait for the sun to aid them once more.
"They can't find out you're alive."
"I know. " the green haired boy sighed, scratching his head impatiently.
"I mean it. They can't find out." Mephisto bit his lip, eyes trained on the empty view from the window as he anxiously tapped a nail against his desk.
"I get it Mephisto." Amaimon furrowed his eyebrows, frustration mixed with confusion shining across his blue gaze as he looked at his brother.
Mephisto held his gaze, pursing his lips together. "Nobody can find out, okay?" He repeated once more, and a ray of surprise flashed across Amaimon's vision as he felt the shift in atmosphere.
The barrier around the office had dropped.
In a split second Amaimon was out of the building.
Mephisto felt the light breeze of his brother's disappearance against his face, and hoped he had made the right decision.
If anyone could find Emi, it was him.
