Silver moonlight glistens on the droplets of rain. Shushing leaves are dyed silver and their bark subtle greys. Quiet symphonies of drain pattering on the canopy of arched trees. A cloud of mist blooms from pale lips in the cold night, a face freckled with unseen scars. There is a steady slosh of the clear backpack saturated with swirling waters and pebbles. A blue fish patiently waits on the shoulder of the water bag, it's scales have a soft glow like northern lights.
Tendrils of cold gusts lift chestnut hair from its ponytail, slowly pulling away the fraying band barely holding the delicate strands together. The heavy boots leave shallow imprints on the earth, quickly filled by pooling water and erased. The earth becomes softer and softer, sucking a body down and down into the black mud. Until the boots must be left behind.
Pale feet touch a long shore sand. Toes and heels going a deep blush of red in the biting chill. A shiver crawls up bare legs, shaking in the thin fabric of a lavender dress, flowing from blue knees to a rib showing stomach and up to an aching chest littered with more freckles of small sealed gashes beneath the empty flesh. A thin silver chain catches the moonlight and from that chain rests a tiny round circle, overflowing with the image of a tree of life.
A leafless tree of life with no roots.
The dress' hands cling to shoulders and cease to cover the naked arms. An open neck clawed by scratching loose hairs, to an oval face fitted with lightless dark eyes, sheltered behind cloudy glasses, the edges glittering in the moonlight.
The blue fish unscrews it's container's lid and leaps into the wide lake with a large splash not fit for its small size. The pale feet shake as the blue fish urges them forwards. The backpack slips from shoulders to disappear in the mud, the frail body quivering until a step is taken onto the water.
Nostalgia. Nostalgia the colour of blue oceans and silver wisps pulls you in and you smile. You take small steps across the water, it's surface rippling under your feet and droplets lift to the air as your foot flicks them up with each step. You laugh at the ripples as they tickle your feet and find yourself running with arms outstretched, the Blue koi swimming beneath you, seeming to grow in size with each beautiful stroke of its tail, it's body leaving rivers of light in its wake. Like when you skate on ice tracing your taken path and how you sometimes overlap on that path.
You reach the middle of the lake and spin on your toes, your hair comes lose of its ponytail haloes around your head. Embracing your body when you stop and then flying behind you as you gallop along the fields of darkness. Silver lights shine on your blushed skin and the dress raises in great bursts of laughter when you skip and swirl and run and dance. Spraying the lake's body up to the sky where it floats and sparkles in the shine, brighter than the crowd of stars gazing down upon your pure joy.
The huge Blue koi larger than your body races across the water's belly and leaps over you in an arch of light. The falling water holds in the air above you like a silver rainbow.
You run up the water and leap onto the small droplets you had thrown up earlier, climbing higher and higher into the open air. The Blue koi, now only the size of a skylark dances in spirals up the water with you until find your fingertips pulling along the atmosphere of the world, the ripples sending the stars into their own swirling dances.
As the sunrise comes and the water droplets slowly descend with quiet plops back to the ground and the stars fade to the haze of morning's breath. You stand in the middle of the lake, watching as the rain falls and smile. The Blue koi swims in happy circles around your feet.
'Let's go home.'
