Hardin's POV
"Hardin give me a hand over there would you." Christian points towards a pile of ropes off to the side.
I pick them up untangling them and walk over to Christian.
Anastasia and Tessa are inside with the kids finishing up snacks to take on the boat.
Tessa begged me to go on the boat with them today, our second day at the cabin.
The air is crisp, fall approaching. The birds chirp in the background in the trees above us.
"We should be just about done, just a few more knots and we're ready to set sail."
"Yay can't wait." I say sarcastically, making eye contact with Christian and letting out a little smile.
"It will be fun little brother. Come on, don't be such a stick in the mud." Christian nudges me.
"I'm the life of the party what are you talking about." I joke.
"Well I really appreciate you coming. It really means a lot. I missed hanging out with you."
"Oh god, here we go again getting all emotional." I roll my eyes.
"Shut up asshole. When I talked about everything in my meetings, everyone kept telling me to get ahold of you and work things out. I was always so scared that you didn't want anything to do with me after — I never got the courage to call you because I thought you hated me."
"I did." I say.
Christian takes a deep breath.
"Well I'm glad you gave me another chance." Christian says making eye contact with me, giving a soft smile.
"Yeah. Just don't fuck up again." I smile nudging my brother.
We share a laugh as Anastasia and Tessa come out, the kids running in front.
"Looks like you two are getting along." Anastasia smiles as she approaches us taking place next to Christian.
"We were just talking. You know, brother stuff." Christian says to his wife.
He leans in and gives her a quick kiss.
"Alright everyone on the boat. Let's get this boat moving before it gets too late." Christian says to the kids, who are chasing each other in the distance.
They come running towards their mother and father.
I look over to Tessa who is smiling, watching the kids play. She wants kids so bad. It's been a few months of trying to get pregnant, almost feeling impossible at this point.
She looks at me and smiles. We hop onto the boat and take a seat, my arm draping over her shoulder. I pull her closer to me and she rest her head on my chest.
Everyone climbs onto the boat and we take off. The wind blowing our hair as the boat glides across the water. A mist sprays up just barely hitting me in the face.
"Do you think there sharks in the water?" Theodore looks at me waiting for my answer.
"This is a lake. Sharks live in the ocean." I laugh.
"What if a shark swims in here from the ocean though?" He looks down into the water.
"Sharks can't survive in the lake. Don't worry we're good. The most you'll see down there are fish." I laugh.
"Fish?" He leans back into his seat. "I have a fish in my room, his name is Ralph."
"You don't say." I laugh, this kids entertaining.
He reminds me of Smith. My — our little brother. Curious all the time and asking a bunch of nosey questions. It must be a kid thing.
"My other fish died. His name was Gary. My dad won him for me at the carnival."
Tessa and Anastasia exchange a look. They clearly think my interaction with the kid is amusing.
"I'm sorry to hear about your fish. I had a hamster once. His name was phineas. He was annoying, always running on his wheel." I laugh remembering that little rodent from my childhood.
"Did he die?" Theodore asks.
"Yeah. He died." I respond. Shocked at his question.
How is this kid only four?
"I figured we'd stop and get some breakfast at this restaurant just right up here." Christian yells over the wind.
"Sounds great." I give a thumbs up and smile.
