"We're breaking up."

John's eyes shot open, "W-what?"

"You heard me John," Veronica put her hands on her hips, "I.. I just can't be your girlfriend anymore!"

John, Roger, and I were eating lunch together as usual. It had been a week since the whole cheating "scandal" with him and Ronnie. I had already filled Roger in on all the juicy tea he missed at school, which included the unfortunate events with John. This past week was the most stressed I believe I had ever seen Deaky. He had to balance school work, spy work, and the stability of his relationship. Veronica slowly slipped away, and the three of us were fully aware of it. Still, I think we all were surprised that she didn't hold out for the school dance in two days.

"Why not?" John stood up, maintaining eye contact with Veronica, "A-are you still upset about the cheating thing? I promise you I didn't cheat! I told you a thousand times I didn't!"

"You and I both know well this relationship has turned out like sh*t," she sassed.

"I'll fix it! I-I just need you to..."

"Not be such a b*tch?" I stabbed my salad with my plastic fork. I knew that's what he was thinking. That's just not what he wanted to say out loud, or rather what she wanted to hear.

"You shut up!" she narrowed her eyes, "You're the bloody cause of all this!"

I scoffed, "Me? I'm not the one with trust issues, dear."

"You two are making it harder than it needs to be," Veronica snapped, "Look John. I don't want to be in this relationship anymore. I'm sure you're a good guy, and you'll find someone soon-"

John's eyes flickered towards mine. I watched the whole thing intensely. She's finally breaking up with him! Oh sorry. Probably shouldn't say that.

"Veronica..." he pleaded.

"It'll be better for the two of us if we separate," she spoke over him. John remained quiet until she strolled back to her friends in the other direction. He sat back down, looking like a little kid who's lost his favorite toy. His face pained with such sadness, and it broke my heart.

"I-I.. I really thought it would work out..." John frowned as he sat next to me. I hugged him close and rubbed his back.

"I'm sorry, darling," I soothed. The guilt bubbled inside me, for I knew I wasn't that sorry. Ever since I first heard about the dance, all I could think about was taking John. But alas, he and Veronica were still together and had plans to have a ball at the occasion. Today gave me a glimmering speck of hope! It's so horrible to say it, I know, but since Veronica broke up with John, I have a chance to take him to the dance. Fantasies and imaginations of me being his date to the dance flurried through my mind.

Oh who am I kidding! He doesn't like me in that way. Besides, he just went through a breakup. It's not like he'll want to go to the dance with me. My wild thoughts snapped out of my head as quickly as they came. All that mattered, at least right now, was that my darling Deaky was doing all right.

"You okay?" Roger leaned in.

"Oh I'm just perfect, Rog!" John rolled his eyes. He always gets snappy when upset.

"Damn, alright..." Roger backed down. He took a bite out of his sandwich and pulled out his phone; I presume to text Brian. The two were practically inseparable! They always manage to find a way to communicate.

"I-I'm sorry," John sighed. Roger perked up and flashed a smile. Deaky fiddled with his fingers, "I'm gonna go to the bathroom."

He shuffled away from my arm and rushed over to the men's restroom. Roger and I watched him walk the ways over and slam the door shut. My heart sank. I inferred the breakup would be hard on him, but I didn't think it would affect him this much. Not after Veronica treated him like absolute sh*t. I guess he really did like her.
