Sam turned on his phone, opening up call logs to call Kat.

As the phone rang, it vibrated, scaring Sam and making him jump a little.

Jake laughed, shaking his head.

"The person you're trying to reach hasn't set up their voicemail box yet-"

The telemarketer said before Sam hung up.

"She didn't answer."

"Okay. Well, Tara should be in there by now."

Jake said, pointing towards the Subway behind him.

"Yeah. Let's go."

Jake nodded and walked to the doors.

"M'lady."

The boy said, bowing as he opened the door.

Sam chuckled, flinging pieces of his hair as he shook his head and walked through the door.

"Hello. How may I help you?"

The lady behind the glass and topping greeted the boys and asked them what they wanted.

They gave their orders and got their food, sitting down at one of the booths.

Sam opened his messages to see who texted him.

His mouth dropped once he saw who it was.

Colby: Hey, Sammy. I love you and I'm so proud of you. Once I finish college, I'll be back. I just can't be there right now. I promise. 🤞🖤

Sam started crying, tears falling onto his screen.

"What's wrong?"

Jake asked, concerned.

"C-Colby just t-texted me back."

He stuttered, showing Jake the message.

The boy finished reading it, looking at Sam, hope flowed over his face as he wished Colby would come sooner so his friend wouldn't be sad.

"He said he'll be back, remember? He always keeps his promises."

Jake said, grabbing Sam's hand and squeezing it in a friendly way.

"Yeah. I still miss him though."

"I never said you didn't."

Sam nodded, agreeing with the colored hair boy.

"You wanna go to the mall? Cheer you up?"

"Sure."

Jake mouthed an okay, finishing his sandwich before throwing away the wrapper.

He sat down, looking around.

"Wait. Where's Tara?"

Sam stifled a little laugh.

"You just realized she wasn't here?"

He death glared Sam, causing the blonde to throw his arms up in defense.

"Sorry."

Sam said, chuckling a little bit again.

Jake called Tara, surprising him when she actually answered.

"Hey, sorry, Jake. I got caught up at work. Can we rain check lunch?"

The boy frowned, but agreed and ended the call.
