Devyn's POV

I woke up hearing quiet cries in a hospital room.

When I looked over, Corey was right beside my bed, crying as he held my hand.

"Oh, Devyn. This shouldn't have happened to you. I'm supposed to protect you and yet you got hurt. I'm so sorry about Elton. I don't know what I was thinking and I can't believe I did that to you. You deserve the world and I love you."

He looked up at me, but I shut my eyes and pretended to sleep until he looked back down at the ground.

I slowly moved my hand closer to his, slow enough to where he couldn't tell I was moving it.

Once it was, I put it on his with a smile plastered on my face as he jumped.

"I love you too, Corey."

He looked up at me with bloodshot eyes.

"You do?"

I nodded and he stood up and hugged me.

As I hugged back, I started coughing violently.

"Dev?!"

He asked worriedly and put his hand on my shoulder as I coughed into my hand.

I pulled my hand away from my face once I stopped only to see blood all over it.

Corey looked at it and his face went white.

Tears started to form in my eyes as my throat burned.

He moved his hand up to my face, cupping my cheek and wiping the drops away as they fell.

"I'm so sorry, Dev."

"What's happening to me?"

I felt my throat closing up as I spoke.

He just looked at the ground again, sniffles coming from his nose.

I just sat there.

"Dev..."

As if on cue, the doctor walked in.

"Uh... Oh! You're awake!"

I looked over at him and smiled a little as I nodded.

"I'm doctor Golbach. You can just call me Ben."

I knew I recognized the name, but before I could say anything, Corey spoke up.

"Wait, are you Sam's brother?"

Ben nodded and I smiled more.

"I knew I recognized your na-"

I tried to say but got interrupted by another coughing fit.

This time there was a whole puddle of blood instead of just a couple of spots.

Corey looked at me concerningly and Ben just frowned a little.

"What's happening to me, Ben?"

I asked, feeling more tears coming.

He looked at Corey with a look I couldn't explain.

"Have you told her yet?"

Corey shook his head and I just got even more confused.

"What is it?"

I croaked as I sniffled.

Ben sighed and looked down at the clipboard.

"You have a tumor, miss Lundy."

My body stiffened as I listened.

"What?"

He went silent.

"When you got shot, we had to do some tests, and when we did one on your brain, there was a black spot. So we did another and it turns out it's a malignant tumor."

I asked, worried.

"What's malignant?"

As I looked at Corey, and his glossy tear covered eyes were pointed towards mine, I squeezed his hand again.

"It means it's cancerous."

Even the doctor's voice cracked.

I felt like my life had just been taken away from me.

Corey started crying as he squeezed my hand tightly.

Sobs poured out of me as I held Corey's hand.

"I'm so sorry."

Ben just held onto his board tightly.

"I can leave you guys alone..."

He said, opening the door and walking out.

Once the door shut, Corey started sobbing too.

"Dev... I'm so sorry."

I sniffled.

"W-why? It's not your fault..."

He just looked back down as his tears fell onto our linked hands.

"Because this shouldn't be happening to you. You're supposed to be healthy and not in the hospital right now, but here you are."

It pained me to see him like this and blaming himself for life's decisions.

"But it's not your fault, Core. It happens. No one can control and stop it."

He moved closer to me as I scooted over and pat the bed.

"Come here."

Nodding, he got up and laid down beside me.

"I love you, Dev..."

"I love you too."

I looked over at him and leaned in, connecting our lips.

He kissed back and wrapped his arms around me in a hug like I was going to leave him.

We pulled away after a few seconds and just cuddled until we fell asleep in each other's arms.
