Sam woke up to hearing his mom yelling.

"Sam! Someone's at the door!"

The boy groaned, not wanting to get out of bed, but he did anyway.

He walked down the stairs and to the front door, opening it to see an envelope taped to a cardboard box.

Picking up the box, he walked into the house and read the shipping tag.

To: Sam Golbach
77 Dogwood Drive
Wichita, Kansas

As he peeled the tape off, he turned around as footsteps rang through his ears.

His mom was behind him, wrapping her maroon robe around her tight body as the cold air snuck into the cracks of the house and chilled her.

"What is it?"

She asked, continuing to walk towards Sam as her slippers slid against the hardwood floor.

"I don't know yet."

He finally opened the box's flaps, revealing little graduation gifts.

There was a little bear with a graduation hat holding a gift card to Chili's.

"Aww. That's cute."

His mom said, picking the bear up and admiring it after Sam say it down.

He nodded, still looking through the box that was mostly filled with candy and white tissue paper.

At the bottom of the box, Sam found a thin, glass sheet, confusing him as he tried to feel around to figure out what it was.

He pulled it out, making his jaw drop and tears form in his eyes as he saw the beautiful object.

It was a picture of him and Colby from before they went off to college.

It had a little quote on the right of the picture.

"Every night I pray, I'll have you here someday. I'll count the stars tonight, and hope with all my might; That when I close my eyes, you'll be right by my side."

Sam started crying as he read the quote, warmth covering him as his mom hugged him from behind.

"Are you okay? What's wrong?"

Sam handed her the picture frame and turned in her arms, crying into her shoulder.

Tears started to fill her eyes too as she read it.

She sat the glass frame on the counter and hugged Sam tighter as he cried harder.

"I miss him, mom."

He said, sobs fogging up his voice.

"I know, sweetie. I do too."

Sam's mom really liked Colby.

She always knew he was good for her son and to see him walk off to college hurt a little bit, especially to see Sam be broken, but she was still proud because she knew he would be back.

And that's why she couldn't tell Sam the surprise that was going to happen that day.

Sam's mom was in the kitchen making BLTs for her and Sam on Friday when she got a phone call from a number she didn't recognize.

She answered it anyway knowing that if she didn't, it would probably be important.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Ms. Golbach. It's Colby."

Her face lit up, Colby's voice flowing in her ears.
