I quickly zip up my backpack once I’ve stuffed all of my essential belongings in, trying to ignore the shouts and poundings on my bedroom door I begin to walk towards the fire escape outside my window.
‘(Y/N)! YOU OPEN THIS DAMN DOOR RIGHT NOW! I’M GOING TO SEND YOU BACK TO THE ORPHANAGE. YOU CAN ROT IN THERE!’
I stop dead on my track. Jaws set tight I clench and unclench my fist, trying to calm myself down. Nico taught me that, and it surprisingly helped. Nico was my only friend, I know pretty sad. But it’s true. In school we were the outcast, we had grown pretty close in the past year and I may have developed a crush on my only friend.
Once I’d calm down, I raised my window open and climbed out. As I run down the stairs into the alleyway I hear my foster mom/dad scream my name from above making me take off as fast as I can.
Maybe it was the fresh air, or maybe it was the fact that I had never ran away before but I began to laugh. Hysterically. I finally stopped running once I was a few blocks away, lost in the winding alleyways. Breathing hard I look around at the different houses and shops surrounding me.
Where was I going? I had no idea. All I had with me was some clothes, money I had saved up, some snacks and my phone.
As I turned into another alleyway I hear a rustling sound behind me. Quickly turning around I stand my ground waiting for someone to show themselves. There was nobody there besides a few dumpsters and broken televisions.
‘Who’s there?’ Gods I sounded like someone out of a horror movie. Turning back slowly I start to walk only this time, faster. I open my backpack, looking for my phone to light up the dull alleyway.
However I don’t get the chance to look for it. Within seconds I’m tackled to the floor by something big and hairy. The wind is knocked out of me as I hit the ground hard and hear a crack. My eyes water in pain as I look into the face of a hideous monster.
It had the body of a huge man and the head of a bull, its long horns inches from my face. I try to squirm, kick and punch at it but the monster is unaffected. It grabs at my throat, chocking me. My vision blurs as I try to stay conscious and fight back. That’s when I see him.
From the side of my vision, dressed in black with a gleaming sword. He runs towards the monster and stabs at it. The monster rolls off me and I can breathe again. To my left the monster tries to ram its horns through the boy.
But instead he gets stabbed causing him to turn into some kind of golden dust. The boy puts his black sword away and walks towards me. I sit up as pain shoots through my abdominal and I let out a gasp of pain. He kneels down next to me.
‘Whoa, slow down. I think you broke something.’ That voice was so familiar.
‘Nico?! Wh……what?’ I was beyond surprised. ‘What the hell? Where did you learn to kick butt like that? And what was that thing?’ I managed to wheeze out.
He tries to laugh, but the worry is evident on his face. ‘Are you ok? Did it hurt you anywhere else?’ I shake my head as he pulls out a slim bottle from another backpack on the floor. ‘Drink this’
I look at it suspiciously before taking a sip. Warmth spreads throughout my body as I take another swig of the (f/f) tasting drink. ‘Whoa.’
'Not too much.’ He says as he takes the bottle away from me and pulls me into a hug. His familiar smell of vanilla fills my senses.
I pull away and look at the battered up boy next to me ‘Nico…’
He looks at me his hair falling into his eyes ‘I know you have a lot of questions (y/n), but we need to get you to safety first. I promise I’ll answer all of them.’ His voice sounds pleading, then ‘(Y/n), what were you doing here?’
I look down, my face growing red. ‘Running away?’
His eyes widen in shock ‘You were just going to leave? Without telling me?’ I open my mouth to reply but decided not to. He takes my chin between his fingers, turning my face towards him. ‘(Y/n)?’
‘I’m sorry Nico, I just couldn’t take another day with those foster parents and I don’t want to be sent to another home again…’ my voice wavers and he pulls me closer to him. He squeezes me tightly against him in reply and I know I’m forgiven.
'We should leave.’ He says as we stand.
'Where is this safe place? And who trusted you with a sword?’ I ask, his arm still around my waist.
He lets out a short laugh ‘Camp Half Blood, it’s a place where people like us can’t get attacked by monsters like that. Your special (y/n).’ My cheeks redden as he looks towards the place he killed the monster. He picks up our backpacks and hands me mine, but not before taking my phone out of it.
‘What are you doing!?’ I asked too late, he’s thrown it into one of the dumpsters.
‘It attracts monsters.’ He simply replies with a smirk. I pinch the bridge of my nose, this was all a bit too much.
‘Ok then' i say with my hands up as if surrendering 'what do you mean by ‘people like us’?’
He grabs my hand, sliding his fingers between mine ‘Demigods.’
