Maya's P.O.V.
The Next Morning
I laid back on my bed as I stared at the ceiling in regret, I didn't get any sleep last night.
I didn't mean to snap on her like that, but she doesn't fully grasp the situation I'm in.
To hear that my aunt is really stressed out about all of this makes me feel even worse.
I just pray that they let my mom go a little sooner than expected, I'm starting to miss my family more now.
My phone buzzed and I looked down seeing I had a missed call from Dinah. I sighed before unlocking my phone and calling her back.
"Hello?" I said.
"Maya..." she whispered.
"Why are you whispering? What's going on?"
"Shush. Where are you?"
"Home. Why?"
"I need you to come to Alejandro's house."
"Why? Dinah, what's going on?"
I heard glass breaking in the background as she began to sob.
"Please, come and get me." Her phone clicked off after she spoke.
I jumped up, throwing on my joggers and a plain tank top before grabbing my keys, doing the dash to my car.
Once I got in I sped as fast as I could to the other side of town. I hope she's okay, she sounded hurt.
After about ten minutes I pulled up on my cousin's block seeing cars everywhere. There were guys posted up on their vehicles, giving me harsh looks as I parked my car.
I got out and everyone became defensive. "Where's Tesoro?" I said.
"Who you?" Some bald dude asked me.
"I'm his cousin." One of his closest friends was out there and nodded his head in agreement.
"Yeah, that's his cousin. Lay off her."
"Thanks," I mumbled.
I walked up the driveway and began knocking on the door. There was a brief silence until I heard breaking glass again.
I banged on the door, but it was no use. I looked behind me as Tesoro's homies were patrolling the block. I stood back some and lightly kicked the door in.
I walked in looking around to glass and debris everywhere. The couch was flipped over and the TV was busted.
"BITCH!" I looked seeing that the basement door was wide open.
I walked over and saw a trail of blood leading from the stairs to the basement floor.
I walked down slowly and saw Tesoro with his shirt off, wiping his red nose.
His knuckles and face were bloody and he was looking down around for something.
He was standing in front of a long table, so I was unable to see if anyone was on the other side of it.
"Yo! What the fucks going on in here?" I said, keeping my distance.
He looked over at me smiling, trying to wipe the blood on his pants.
"Cousin! What's crackin' family. How you been?"
I heard sobs coming from the corner as I watched him glare back at the floor.
"Who's over there Alejandro?"
"No one. Ayo, you tryna hit the bodega later?"
"I'm not asking again. Who's that on the floor?"
The sobs grew louder as he looked down and kicked whoever it was, causing them to whimper in pain.
"Shut the fuck up."
"Come on bro, move out the way."
He wiped his nose again and slid his hat off his head. "This ain't none of your business cousin. Just leave."
"Ma-Ma....." I heard the soft voice stutter, and I frowned.
"Dinah," I said. "Is that you?"
Tesoro looked down and clenched his fist on the table in front of him. "So this is who you called?"
He raised his Timberland boot and slammed it down as I heard a crack from across the room.
Growing impatient, I ran and tackled him as we both fell through a cabinet.
I held him down with full force as I looked back to see Dinah on the floor with blood everywhere.
"Dinah get out of here. Go!"
Trying her hardest, she crawled and struggled to pull herself up before limping to the stairs.
I shoved Tesoro before standing up looking down at him. Out of nowhere, he punched me and I held my throbbing lip as I felt blood ooze out.
I wiped the blood off my lip before kicking him in the chest. He fell back into the now broken cabinet, I dragged him across the glass and blood-covered floor before picking him up and putting him in a chokehold.
He struggled and struck me in the eye with his elbow, but I held my grip on him as he started to lose consciousness.
I flexed my bicep, choking him a bit more than before.
"Let...me...go..." I yanked him to the left a bit trying to speed up the process.
He scratched at my bare arm as I tightened my grip as much as I could.
Tesoro began to slump over my arm before I pushed him into the steel table in front of us.
I turned him around as he gasped for air and punched him one last time, knocking him out cold. He slid onto the floor from the table and laid there unconscious.
I looked around the room before leaving the basement. I walked around the living room looking for Dinah but she was nowhere to be found.
I ran upstairs going through two rooms looking for her when I heard crying from the bathroom.
I knocked lightly on the door as the crying halted. "It's me Dinah. Open the door."
I could tell she hesitated, but moments later, the door swung open and she jumped into my arms. She cried on my shoulder as I rubbed her back in sympathy.
"Hey, hey it's okay. You're going to be fine now. It's all over." She sobbed some more as I pulled away from her embrace.
"Thank you." She mumbled.
"No problem, but we should go. Like now."
Dinah nodded as we left the house and made it outside to my car. Luckily the dudes that once were out there were gone so we left with no problems.
I drove in silence but there was a nag in the back of my head that was becoming a fearful realization for me.
Alejandro is going to come after me.
And soon.
