One Month Later (October)
Maya's P.O.V.
Friday
10:42 A.M.I tucked a piece of my dress shirt inside of my pants, holding tight to my flowers as I stood outside of the prison.
Today was the day. The day my mom was finally freed and we could all go on and live our lives freely.
Tesoro never came for me, apparently, word got out about him beating up Dinah and they've been having a gang war ever since.
I told Dinah she was more than welcome to come and stay at my place but she declined the offer. She said she didn't want to interfere with my life.
My mom was supposed to be released earlier, but the court that was signing her papers wanted to be some bitches and they pushed back her release date.
The sounds of the gates being opened knocked me out of my thoughts as I smiled widely. My mom came walking through the gates, looking up at the sun and the environment around her.
Her outfit was a bit snug since she had grown a bit thicker over the years, but she still looked amazing. She walked up to me and gave me the biggest hug ever.
"Estoy finalmente libre bebé."
Trans: "I'm finally free baby."
I began to cry on her shoulder as I felt her hold on tighter to my head. After a long moment of embrace, she stepped back and smiled.
"Now, let's go get something to eat."
"Waffle House?"
"My favorite." She pushed some of my hair behind my ear smiling. "Sure baby, let's go."
"Alright. Oh, these are for you."
"Aww thank you."
She smiled and took the flowers as I held them out, sniffing the dozen of roses. We walked around the parking lot to my car and got in, driving to a nearby Waffle House.
"How does it feel to be a free woman?" I asked.
"It feels wonderful. The outside world smells a bit different."
"Oh, welcome to pollution and global warming."
She laughed, looking out the window at all the scenery. "It's still a beautiful city."
I shook my head. "I'm glad I got out of here. Coming back reminded me of how bad it was."
"Hey, never forget where home is. Okay?"
"Okay."
"We may have had our bad times in this city but we've also made fantastic memories together."
"Yeah, I guess so."
Mama played in my hair and continued to look outside. Although she was right, New York wasn't the place for me. I needed to get back home to Atlanta, where my family is.
Dakota's P.O.V.
"Ouch baby that hurts."
I winced as Adriana tied my shoelace on my broken leg. "Stop being such a wuss and take it."
