Hyunwoo
~New Year's Eve~
"Are you sure that you have to leave right now, Sooyeon Unnie," Mrs. Yoo asks my mom.
"I'm sorry, Areum ah. I wish that I could stay longer. There's an urgent issue that needs to be fixed at one of the overseas branches and my boss requested me to go solve it," my mom says. I sighed as I wasn't surprised at all. This isn't the first time that this kind of situation happened. Work always has been her first priority after Dad left us for the woman he had an affair with. I know that it is an escape for her. I just can't but feel disappointed and mad that she won't spend time with her only son.
As if she sensed what I was thinking, she gives me a knowing look and embraces me. I gritted my teeth and was going to not reciprocate her hug but I couldn't find it in myself to follow through with it. We stayed like that for nearly a minute but then she lets go of me. "Hyunwoo ah...be good, okay? I'll make it up to you when I get back," she promises.
"Okay, Eomma. Be careful," I said with a stiff smile.
"I'll leave Hyunwoo in your care," she says to the Yoo's.
"Of course, we don't mind at all," Mrs. Yoo smiles politely. My mom returns her smile and bids us goodbye before leaving the house. I found myself staring at the front door in false hope that she would come back. Then, I felt someone taking hold of my left hand. I looked to my left and found Kihyun looking at me with a sympathetic look.
To clear the tension in the air, Mr. Yoo clears his throat all of a sudden and says, "Aren't you kids going to go on a date to celebrate the new year? Go on now. Don't let us two hold you two back."
"Appa," Kihyun glares at his dad before looking at me silently asking if I was okay with his eyes. Not wanting him to worry, I nodded and smiled even though I wasn't particularly happy at the moment. "Let's go," he says and gestures to the front door.
~thirty three minutes later~
~Hangang~
"Which stall do you want to go too first," I asked as we approached the fair taking place next to Hangang for New Years.
"Hmm, let's play that game," he says and pops at a stall where there are balloons attached to a wall and people were throwing darts at them. I nodded and we walked over to the booth. We had to wait a few minutes before it was our turn to play.
After paying for five darts, Kihyun picks up one and throws it after a few seconds. It missed the red balloon and bounced off the wall. Kihyun curses under his breath and picks up another one. He takes a deep breath and threw it after a few seconds. This one nearly hit a balloon but it got stuck in the wall.
I picked up one and said, "You got to throw the dart in an arc not straight on or else you will miss." Then, I threw it in an arc and popped a pale green balloon.
"Like this," he asks and pretends to throw it but he was still holding the dart incorrectly.
"No, like this," I said as I readjusted the dart in his hand and guided him in throwing it. It soars through the air and pops a pink balloon. When he didn't say anything, I look in his direction in time to see him looking away while blushing lightly.
I chuckled and picked up the last dart before handing it to him. "Now, you try," I said while smiling ear to ear.
