When Ambrose texted me, at first, I was a bit taken aback. I had been to his house countless times, but it was always when his aunts and cousin were out, and we could have the place to ourselves. So I was surprised to see he wanted me over for a Spellman family dinner.
I was almost nervous to be meeting his family. Of course, I knew what they were, Ambrose told me a while ago... but I was mortal... and he warned that some of his kind disliked mortals. I wondered if they'd hate me.
In the past, I had never been so nervous when approaching the Spellman Mortuary, but this time was so different. I felt like I was being watched, and sure enough from the kitchen window, I saw one of Ambrose's aunts staring me down.
I shivered, thinking it was from the cold, and knocked on the door. In an instant, the door flew open as if Ambrose had been anxiously waiting for me.
"Hey," he said with the accent I fell more in love with every day. He pulled me out of the cold and into the mortuary and laid a sudden kiss on my lips. It was over just as fast as it began, but I wanted more... I wanted him... the feeling and the thought washed away when his aunts and cousin approached.
Ambrose and I turned to them, and he put a hand on the small of my back. "Aunties and Sabrina, this is my girlfriend, [y/n] [y/l/n]. [y/n], this is Sabrina Spellman, my cousin, and my Auntie Hilda and Auntie Zelda."
"It's very nice to meet you all," I said as calmly as possible. Sabrina and Hilda both welcomed me with smiles, but Zelda did not. She stared me down with an upturned upper lip. I gave Ambrose's shoulder a gentle squeeze as a sign for him to break the silence.
"Dinner, anyone?" Ambrose asked cheerfully.
"Yes!" Hilda encouraged.
We all marched to the dining table, which was covered with beautiful foods that made my stomach growl. There was turkey, green beans, gravy, a bowl of mixed fruits, and pastries. So many pastries. I spotted croissants, cookies, muffins, toast, baguettes, and so many more.
"This looks delicious," I commented.
"Thank you," Hilda took credit.
Ambrose pulled out a chair for me and pushed it in for me once I was seated. He sent me a wink after he sat next to me and took my hand. His eyes looked to mine as if to ask, "Is this alright?" And I sent him a look that said, "Of course it is."
In an instant, Ambrose placed a kiss on my cheek, and I swallowed hard when I saw Zelda watching us intently. Meanwhile, Hilda and Sabrina started filling their plates with food.
As the serving plates made their way around the table, Ambrose's hand fell to my thigh and rested there for all of dinner. While we ate, his hand occasionally tested going higher on my leg until I was nearly choking on my food, and my cheeks were burning red. And then it would slide back down and wait.
I offered to help clear the table and wash the dishes, but all of the Spellman's, including Zelda, insisted that no guest of theirs would do any such thing. Hilda, Zelda, and Sabrina all picked up the plates and silverware and took them to the kitchen. When the table was cleared, and they were busy washing in the kitchen, Ambrose pulled me into his lap and started laying endless kisses on my neck.
"Ambrose," I giggled, playing with his shirt collar.
"Yes?" he asked innocently against my neck.
"We're going to get caught."
"Mmmm... sounds like fun." I hit his arm playfully. "You're funny when you try to be mad at me."I looked at him as he pulled away from my neck. "I could never be mad at you."
His glance switched from my lips to my eyes, and he looked at me for a while. I ran a hand through his hair as he watched me. "I love you," he said.
I froze and looked down at him. "I love you, too." We hadn't said that before. Not to each other. But I meant it, and I could tell that he meant it, too. "I love you so much, Ambrose Spellman."He saw my underlying challenge and accepted it with a grin. "I love you so much it could kill me."
"Don't be dramatic."
"I'm being truthful," he snickered as he kissed my lips. "I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you..." Every time he said it, he followed it with a kiss.
"I think we get it," Sabrina rolled her eyes as she and her aunts reentered the room.
I nearly jumped out of Ambrose's lap, but he caught me. "Aunties, if you don't mind... I think [y/n] will be staying the night."
Zelda groaned, "Just don't keep us up, Ambrose."
Ambrose hid his face in the crook of my neck as he turned red. "We wouldn't dream of it," I said to her. She looked at me with shock, as if wondering how dare I, a mortal, speak to her. "Thank you for the meal, Hilda. It was delicious."
"Any time, dear."
I took Ambrose's hand, and we both stood. "Good night," we said in sync before going up to his room.
