"I was told that I'd find you here."

You looked up from the book you were reading, smiling when you saw Nick standing at the bottom of the Spellman porch.

"Sabrina was chosen as the Handmaiden," you informed him, closing the book but leaving your hand in between the pages you were reading. "I'm staying with the Spellmans until Feast night."

"It was exactly Sabrina who told me where I could find you when she heard I was looking."

You gave a soft chuckle. "She's such a sweet girl. I wish I'd known her before this."

Nick raised his eyebrows, ascending the steps. "I'm sorry you were chosen."

"Originally my plan was to scold you for giving me such false hope I wouldn't be," you said with a sly grin that told him you were joking and you shrugged. "There's not much I can do about it now. Just have to suck it up and get through it."

"I suppose you're right," he replied. He took the seat beside you, leaning over the arm of the chair with his chin in his hand. "What are you reading?"

"Shakespeare's 'All's Well That Ends Well,'" you told him.

"I've never heard of it," he said. "What's it about?"

You glanced down at the book, raising your brows. "Our main character, Helen, has forced Bertram into marriage. He said he'd never love her until she carried his child and possessed his family ring. So like any respectable, God-fearing woman, she's stolen his family ring and tricked him into bed with her. And now she's pregnant with his child. She won in the end but I'm concerned for both Bertam and Shakespeare."

"You weren't concerned about Shakespeare when you read Romeo and Juliet?" Nick asked amusedly.

"At least they were consensual," you quipped.

Nick hummed sarcastic laughter as he reached over, snatching the book from your lap and saving your page in the process." Anyways, what's got you so interested in the reading material of the mortal world?"

"Dying in a few days, Nick, that's what," you replied as you watched him flip through the pages. "I came clean on the phone this morning and told my cousin I'm closest to that I was scared to do this. She said she was sad I had been chosen but backing out now would cause my family 'immense shame among the entire Church of Night.' I can't do that to them. I don't know what to do anymore."

There was a silent moment between you two.

"Do you want a hug, Y/n?" Nick asked suddenly, looking over at you. You slightly frowned but found yourself nodding. Nick stood up, coming to stand in front of you.

"Is this weird?" You asked, looking up at him.

"I'm comforting you, what's weird about that?" He asked, holding his hand out. You hesitated before taking it and standing up. Nick wasted no time in wrapping his arms around you and pulling you into a tight embrace. You felt him rest his chin on top of your head and after a few seconds, you allowed yourself to relax. You wrapped your arms around his torso and let your head rest against his chest.

"What's weird about this is that you're comforting me because I'm upset that I have the high honour and privilege of being cannibalized in a few days."

A deep chuckle rumbled in the boy's chest. "You're pretty brave if you ask me. If I were in your place, I'd be throwing a tantrum of the century not to be sacrificed."

"If only it were that simple, Scratch," you sighed. "But thank you for the positive sentiments anyways."

"Y/n?"
