"It's formal time," Riley said and Maya looked at her best friend.
"Wow, the most exciting time of the year. Yay! Riley you go. I'm not keen on it," Maya said and Riley looked at her best friend.
"Maya..."
"No. I know there is going to be a father-daughter dance as well and my dad isn't here. Please go with Lucas. I'll be fine," Maya said.
"No you won't. Please come," Riley said.
"Go. I'll see ya around," Maya said.

Maya was sitting on the couch as it was close to six.
She knew that the formal would start at seven but didn't know what was going to happen next.
Sbe heard a knock on the door and went to answer it.

"Josh? What on earth are you doing here?" Maya asked.
"Hey, Maya. Trying to talk you out of this nonsense," Josh said and Maya sighed as he walked in.
"I'm gonna kill your niece," Maya said and went to sit down again.
"Relax. Why don't you want to go, tho? It's your first high school dance," Josh said as he went to sit down next to her.
"My father is dead Josh. I have bigger things to worry about than a stupid dance," Maya said with shallow tears in her eyes.
"Okay. I didn't mean to..." Josh said realizing tears are streaming down her cheeks.
"Maya? Hey, it's okay. Come here," Josh said pulling Maya close and she sighed.

"It's okay. Everything is going to be okay," Josh said trying to console her.
"No it isn't. Gosh, you don't understand. He's gone. My father..."
"I know he's gone, Maya. I know he is," Josh said as Maya pulled away.
"Why can't I just put it behind me? It happened eleven year ago and it still haunts me," Maya said.
"Because you loved him. You loved your father with everything in you and you didn't get to say goodbye. Maya, it's understandable that you are upset and torn apart," Josh said and Maya wiped her tears away.
"What if you and I just do something here? We could easily watch a movie or something like that," Josh said.
"I'd like that," Maya said.
