Chapter 38

***Eros***

"Are you ready?" My instructor asks and I nod. "Good. Since you're a wizard, your test will be a little different from the others."

She hands me a ball and sets 3 cups on the table. "I need you to perform the spells given on each inanimate object using the least amount of magic as possible."

I tremble at the sensation of my magic surging within my body ready to be released. I recite the spells in my head and watch as each cup filled up.

"Perfect. I see that you don't need to chant your spells out loud. That's a great achievement." She lifts each cup and inspects it. "Very fine control."

She snaps her fingers and the cups disappear. "Now, I need you to direct all of your magic toward the ball in your hands and release. it"

"What?" I ask hesitantly. I chew the inside of my cheek and chuckle nervously.

"Is there a problem?" She tilts her head and her eyes narrow. "If there is, please let me know so I can make preparation."

"I'm just nervous. I'm afraid that I'll break it." I glance at the ball in my head. It's been a while since I use more than 10% of my magic, not since my father passed away.

She laughs like I said a joke and waves me off. "Do not worry about that. It's not a normal ball. It's been around for centuries and has developed its own consciousness in Ilean. It will let us know the level of your magic. Go ahead."

I tenderly release my magic and gasp as it flows into the ball.  I close my eyes and release all of my magic, but it was quickly replenished by the magic surrounding me. I gasp as I sense a consciousness prying into my secrets.

Without my permission, my magic attacks it. I follow its streams of consciousness and end up at the power source. It tries to attack me, but I surrounded it slowly absorbing its power. Unknowingly, a wicked smile makes its way to my face as the consciousness lies weakly within the ball.

"Mr. Dan."

I ignore the voice and close my fist. It struggles weakly and grows motionless.

"Mr. Dan!"

I open my eyes to find my instructor staring at me in horror, but I couldn't register the words that she was screaming. I felt too high. I was almost there.

"STOP IT!" She screams and I stumble, dropping the ball. It rolls to a stop next to the pool and I try to withdraw my magic but it was too late.

BOOM.

What... just happened? I blink slowly as I was pulled back on my feet. The ringing in my ears finally stops and I spot the shattered ball on the floor.

"It escaped. The gremlin escaped." A man runs out of the station in panic.

"Are you alright, Mr, Dan?" My instructor rasps setting me down on my seat. I nod, keeping my eyes on the ball.

"Can you tell me what happened?" Her voice grows cold and her eyes fix on me.

"I don't know. I did as you said and release all of my mana within the ball." I tear my gaze from the pieces and meet her frosted glare.

"Was there anything out of place?"

"I felt something in there. It attacked me and my magic responded before I could." I set my hands on my lap trying to calm my racing mind.

"It didn't attack you. It was sensing your level, but you interpreted that as a threat and shattered the 10-century old consciousness. " She states sternly. " You said your magic responded before you did?"
