Chapter 11.
*****
I sat in the uncomfortable plastic seat with my legs crossed beneath me as played with the phone in my hands. It was Maximilian's, I assumed he had dropped it during everything and I brought it with because he would probably want it once he was up. He would be fine... I clenched my jaw nervously as I looked over at Adrian who was standing outside of Maximilian's room speaking to the doctor. We had been at the hospital for a few hours. I had not seen Maximilian before he was brought in because Adrian would not let me, he was covered in blood when he was trying to hold me back. I knew the bullet did some damage because of the amount of blood there was and now they were taking so long in there... Adrian had been standing in the hall while they worked on Maximilian until the operation finished and he could speak to the doctor. Adrian nodded as the doctor bowed his head before he walked off and Adrian turned to look at me. I bit my lip as he made his way over to me and looked up at him once he came to stand in front of me.
"He's stable, the bullet shattered a part of his collarbone and some of the pieces pierced an artery, which explains the amount of blood." He said. "He'll be okay, though he won't be able to use his right arm for a while."
"Ethan's gone." I told him. He looked around and nodded slowly. I knew Ethan had died the moment I saw that shot, here was no way he would have survived it.
"I have to find out how far things are with discovering who flew those drones. Drive home with me?" He asked.
"They'll call you when they find something, Adrian. We should wait here until your brother wakes up." I said.
"His guards are here and my parents are on their way. He's not going to wake up for at least another hour, he'll be fine without us, Aria."
"Then I'll wait until they get here. Ethan's not here anymore."
"Right, but you know very well his guarding team were trained and structured for a situation where they might lose anyone in that team, including Ethan. They've got this. You are not his guard anymore and I was the one targeted so he is safe as long as he is not near me. He's okay, Ari. He does not need a babysitter. You don't need to – no, you should not stay with him."
I looked over at the door leading to Maximilian's room. There were a couple of guards in front of it, a few down the hall. There were more in his room. I still did not feel comfortable leaving him alone, but I also did not want to argue with Adrian about it. Was it weird that I wanted to stay with Maximilian? He would be alright. Adrian was right, he was the one being targeted.
"Fine." Adrian smiled as I looked at him, his smile making me automatically smile back at him.
"Good. Let's go."
"Oh, wait. I need to give him his phone." I waved the phone as I hopped out of the chair I had been sitting on.
"Alright, I'll wait here and call home." He replied taking out his own phone. I nodded before I made my way to Maximilian's room, pausing to peek in through the square glass in the door, but all I saw was the edge of his bed so I carefully pushed the door open to go inside.
As expected, it was quiet apart from the light beeping coming from the heart monitor beside him. I slowly walked over to him expecting him to look quite pale and I got what I expected, along with sunken eyes that made it look much worse than Adrian described but I figured that was the blood loss. He was breathing lightly and had a bandage plastered on his collar while his arm was secured against his chest. He looked better than I thought he would. I placed his phone on the table beside him before I left.
I found Adrian at the end of the hall and we walked out of the hospital into the dark evening to find a fleet of cars waiting and Adrian's jaw dropped slightly.
