Chapter 23.
*****
Everything was pretty calm for the first twenty minutes of the meeting Adrian and his father were part of. There were nine other men seated around the table with them and a couple of other guards in the room. From what I knew, the two other young-looking men were Adrian's cousins and the rest of the men were other politicians and someone's secretary. I was not really paying attention to what they were talking about as I focused more on what I could hear outside the room and watching the windows. Every few minutes I would check-in with Riley or Kendall to see if everything was still quiet. I looked down as my watch lit up with a message from Kendall saying something seemed off. I immediately stepped towards the table.
"Time to go." I said.
"Now?" one of the other men looked at me but the king and Adrian just stood up.
"Thank you for joining us, we will conclude on another occasion." The king said before he turned to leave but I held my arm in front of him to ask Riley if it was clear. He said yes and I let the king step into the hallway to join the guards that were waiting for him out there. They immediately began leading him away towards the stairs with the rest of the group following swiftly and Adrian tried to walk out of the room too but I shoved him back in when I heard the light ding from the elevator that signalled that it was opening, immediately ducking back into it myself as a round of shots went off.
"Get him out of here." I nodded at Riley telling Adrian to come as I let the room. He jogged after me in the direction his father had gone and I could hear screaming coming from around the hotel. When we reached the end of the hall, I turned to walk away from where I knew the stairs were.
"Where are we going – my father went down that way." I grabbed Adrian's arm to keep him from falling or bumping into something as he looked behind us.
"Can't have the two of you in the same place." I replied. That was so that it would be harder to follow all of us and also in the unfortunate event that we failed to complete our mission, only one of the royals would be killed. I did not say that to Adrian though and just kept leading him down the hall and then down the emergency stairs leaving Riley and the others upstairs to take care of anything that could be behind us.
The emergency stairs had no windows, so it would make it a pretty safe trip all the way down to the first floor where Kendall and the others should be waiting for us. It would also make it easier since the people looking for Adrian could only come from in front of or behind us and could not tell exactly where we were at the moment. I kept trying to get a hold of him as I jogged down the stairs but he was not answering any of my messages. The only reason for that could be that he was caught up fighting or chasing someone.
"What's going on? I mean, what happens now – what do we do?" Adrian asked as we ran.
"We're probably going to have trouble once we get downstairs."
"Then we can just stay in here until they tell us it's safe to leave." Adrian said.
"It's not safe to stay here, there would be nowhere to go if we need an escape." I said stopping without warning so that Adrian could run right into me and I immediately threw my elbow back into his stomach. He coughed falling back onto the stairs.
"What the hell, Aria?" He hissed.
"You're wearing the vest, good." I had done that just to see if I felt his bulletproof vest when I hit him, "Get up, Adrian."
"You could not just ask me if I am wearing it?!" He shouted shoving himself onto his feet.
"We don't have time to talk." I replied as I continued to make my way down the flight of stairs and heard Adrian release what sounded like an angry growl while he followed me. It took a few more minutes to get all the way down where I stopped to let Adrian catch his breath as I unloaded the magazine from the Uzi I held to make sure it had the exact amount of bullets I thought it did. I could hear shots clearer now, and that definitely explained why Kendall had not been able to get back to me. Luckily, most of it sounded like it was coming from outside or upstairs. I looked at Adrian hearing him sigh. "Don't worry, I'm here to make sure you don't get hurt."
