Chapter 21.

*****

Riley had been right, the surveillance recordings were just a whole lot of nothing and what made it even more pointless was not knowing how far back to go. I just went back two weeks before the attempt at killing Adrian, most of the time I was staring at an empty hallway, occasionally one of the royals walking around accompanied by a guard, occasionally by themselves, there was also me. I had gotten through a few days when we had to leave to get Adrian where he was going. A meeting with some governors at some hotel with his father who was already there. I had been running through the audio with the video, slowing the footage down every time I heard something but it was usually just people talking in the hallway our loud yelling from the rooms when our friends had been over.

Though I had been placed on the mission, Riley and Kendall were sticking around to help me with it, which was great because it meant I could get away from Adrian every few hours. However, when we were on a plane we were all stuck together. I still sat as far away from Adrian as I possibly could letting Kendall sit across him on the private plane we were in and I heard him let out a light scoff when he noticed where I was, I did not look up at him as I just continued to look through footage.

I gave up on hallway footage five minutes into the flight and decided to look into the few offices that had cameras in them, plugging in one of the USBs without knowing which room it was. I recognised the room once it began playing, it was on the third floor where most of the other offices were. I frowned. No one usually went up to the third floor... but that would make it the perfect place to have meetings when you did not want other people interrupting. I decided it was necessary to look through these too and began to speed through it as I yawned and rubbed my eyes lightly. Maybe it would be a better idea to just take a nap until we got there. I was about to exit the video but I paused when I noticed movement and began hearing voices, I tapped to rewind and then began playing it at normal speed.

I raised my brows and glanced over at Adrian when I saw him enter the room in the video, followed by his father and his brothers. They seemed to be having some kind of meeting as they sat around a table and I felt myself smile as the first thing the King did was reprimand Maximilian about coming back without speaking to anyone prior. I watched each prince as they ran through schedules, meeting plans and outcomes of their travels. Edward looked serious and focused and Edgar seemed to be paying attention despite leaning on the table looking bored as he flipped through the book in front of him while Adrian was tapping away on his phone and Maximilian sat back in his chair with his eyes narrowed at the person across him, who happened to be Adrian. I tilted my head. From what Maximilian was wearing, it looked like the day after he had gotten back, I had not known his parents or Edwin were at the palace then. But I was with Adrian and then Maximilian with our friends on that day, when could they have had time to meet up? After the rest of us had gone to sleep? I glanced at the time of recording. Right. It was just past midnight.

"Edgar, Max. Sit up straight." It was about the fifth time they were being told to do so.

"No one is here." Maximilian replied, neither of them moving.

"You're ruining your posture." The king eyed his son but Maximilian was still not looking at his father. Adrian looked up from his phone and raised his brows at Maximilian seeing his youngest brother's glare.

"Is something wrong?" He asked making Edward and Edgar turn to look at him and then Maximilian.

"No." Maximilian sat up straight, "Are we finished, father? I have things to do."

"It's 1 AM, what could you possibly have to do right now?" Edward asked tilting his head as if genuinely curious about the answer

"Sleep." Edward chuckled at his brother's answer.
