Chapter 13.
*****
I ate breakfast by myself as I scrolled through random social media posts and replied to Adrian's messages. It had been a few days since he left again but this was different because he seemed quite unhappy with it. I understood why, he left with a bunch of palace guards when we did not even know who was against him yet which put him on edge because he was afraid. I was glad he had Kendall and Riley with him. We could trust them and they were really good at their jobs. I kept having him update me on how things were going and was flattered when he said he would rather have had me with him because he would feel safer.
"Oats again? Really, Aria?" I frowned looking up at Maximilian as he walked in.
He had been discharged and basically acted like he was paralysed until he felt like he wanted to be left alone for a while. He was so dramatic. I guess his fake paralysis was supported by the fact that people were afraid to even let him walk down the stairs alone because of the possibility that he could fall and hurt his elbow again.
"Why do you eat this every day?" He asked me as he reached to scoop some oats for himself but I grabbed his wrist. Right, maybe I was contributing to his behaviour as well, I was just afraid he would burn himself. Maximilian smiled at me as he sat down across me and I stood up to put some oats into a plate for him. "Thank you, Ari."
"It's the closest thing to what I used to eat at home." I replied. It was sweeter than the breakfast I used to have at home even without my adding sugar and much less nutritional, but it was close enough to make me feel nostalgic so I ate it.
"Oh. I'm assuming what you ate was gross."
"Max." I laughed even though I tried not to and he grinned back at me. He was not exactly wrong. I never cared how things tasted before and as we always just ate whatever would keep us healthy and we could eat fastest to get back to work when we were on missions.
"I invited the others over, my brothers are all working so they can't be here." He seemed quite disappointed by that fact but continued to speak, "Anyway, they'll be here around eleven. Want to join us?" he asked. I nodded in response to his question even though I had no idea why he was asking when we had spent most of the past couple of days playing board games or watching movies because neither of us had much else to do. I had finished the report I was supposed to write the day Adrian had left and it only took me a couple of hours. "We're having an event next week for Edwin and Edgar's birthday. Are you coming?"
"Next week?" I raised my brows. After what happened?
"Yes. My parents think it's too short of a time away to cancel the event without people assuming there is a very serious reason and they do not want to cause that kind of panic so they're keeping it going. Of course there's extra security in the form of not allowing any of us to step outside at all or go anywhere without three agency-appointed guards."
"Wow." I said, "I wasn't invited."
"Like you need an invite." He rolled his eyes and I smiled.
"Sure, I'll come. How are you going to explain your arm to guests?" It was currently hanging over his chest so that it would not put strain on his collarbone injury.
"Skateboarding. You know, I'm known as the fun prince alongside Edgar, Aria."
"Or the reckless prince." I mumbled.
"What?"
"Your injury makes you look cool."
"That's what I thought." We laughed.
We finished breakfast talking more about the upcoming party and what Maximilian wanted for his birthday, it included his usual activities and it was obvious he was glad his shoulder would be healed by then because he hated not being able to do what he wanted to.
