Chapter 22.

*****

I was anxious for the rest of the flight as I fidgeted with my phone wanting to call Maximilian to ask him what the hell he had done but once we landed I did not time to call him as we had t/o move fast to get Adrian safely to the hotel. Luckily, Adrian was being quite compliant and even though he looked like he was about to speak to me sometimes, a simple glare resulted in him looking away from me and keeping all that to himself.

When we arrived at the hotel, we escorted Adrian to his room with barely anyone even seeing him enter the hotel as we came in through the back before taking him into one of the rooms we rented. I asked Kendall to watch over the prince before I walked into another one of the empty rooms to call Maximilian and waited the couple of rings before he answered brightly.

"Hey, Ari. Miss me already?" I held my breath remembering the argument he had with his brother. They had been right, he really did like me... Wow... That was weird... and yet at the same time, I was not really as surprised as I thought I should be. I was actually quite flattered... It was like part of me already knew he liked me. I just did not want to believe or acknowledge that part because I was dating Adrian and Maximilian was his brother and my best friend so it would just have been awkward to accept that. "Ari?" He repeated with a chuckle. I brushed the thoughts away. This was not about that, and I did not want things between Maximilian and me to be weird in the last few days I would be knowing him so I was not going to bring it up, the thought of even talking about it to him made my face heat.

"Maximilian." I said bringing my focus back to what I had called him for.

"What's with the formality?" He asked sounding amused.

"You called Heath to 'take care' of something. Adrian?" I asked. He was quiet. "I watched the footage of the morning all of you had that meeting, Max. What did you do?"

"Uh..." I shut my eyes letting out a sigh at his lingering voice before I heard the phone moved from his ear as he called out that he needed to take the phone call. There was some shuffling that almost hid the sound of his footsteps and a door opening and closing and then silence before he seemed to bring the phone back to his ear to speak, "That was 'take care' of him as in scare him or something, I was angry – you probably saw that. Wait, how did you see that? What footage –? No, point is, I realised it was stupid right afterwards when I calmed down and called him off."

"Called him off?"

"I know it sounds like I was hiring a hit or something, but I was not. I genuinely was just going to scare him, or hurt him... slightly."

"How?"

"I don't know. I did not actually plan it, I cancelled it before we could even consider doing anything to him, really."

"Why would you trust Heath? Wasn't he one of the men that advised your uncle on how to get rid of all of you?"

"Maybe... look, I did not think of it at the time and Royals all use the same... sources to get things like that done. My uncle is dead so Heath can't be working for him anymore." I frowned at that.

"What loyalty does he have to any of you? Why would you trust him?"

"I don't. I got one of my guards – Charles – to retrieve the footage the same day, I checked the USB afterwards and it was the one from that morning so I destroyed it. Which is why I don't understand how you saw it, how did you get a hold of the footage?"

"Really easily, it's with the rest of the palace CCTV footage." I said.

"But..." He drifted, "Uh... oh crap."
