She stood, awaiting the trial and error of Scott, Stiles and Theo. It was after first period, and Maxine shuffled with her binders, stacking them into her locker. Being a freshman gave her separation anxiety. She had no friends her age, and there was a doubt in her chest that she ever would. Perhaps in the future... but right now she had to control her train of thought. Lacrosse. Today was her chance to be seen as something more than an introverted newcomer.
Scott appeared to be infatuated with the girl that transferred, and it made Theo wonder if that was how he presented himself as before Maxine had asked him out. It was tiring, and he was grateful for when they reached Scott's little sister. The brother moved his head between the couple, deciding to mention his ammunition.
"Don't sneak into my sister's room again Raeken." He wanted to be visualised as protective. Sure Theo had been there for her when Rafael left, but Scott became her shelter. The eldest McCall would be damned if he decided to stop protecting her from the flood.
"You heard?" Nothing had happened, minus the discussion that revolved around today's events, but Theo still stuttered. Scott was his friend, and he was insulted in a minimal way to know that was why he thought he had came to visit her in the night. Their relationship was more than that, and that wasn't even involved yet.
"Well we heard you sneak off with Stilinski here." Maxine smirked at her defence, watching Stiles' lips blubber about, spewing the beginning of words. What couldn't he say? "Tell us, since we're all revealing things." She crossed her arms, looking up at the plaid wearer.
"Yeah Stiles, where were you going?" Theo joined in, noticing the pressure was getting to the boy.
His breathing had shortened and the pace had increased. Stiles was finding it difficult to keep the excitement between just him and Scott. Technically, she was Scott, any McCall was close enough.
"On the radio in my car it said there was a dead body so me and Scotty here went to search for it but then my dad caught me and Scott lost his inhaler so when he was looking for it he found the top half of the dead girl." In an instant, Stiles' hand covered his mouth, his eyes wide and looking at his annoyed best friend.
Maxine wished she could say she was surprised. But she wasn't, this was Scott and Stiles she was talking about. If they weren't insane, that'd be insane.
"Idiots." She stated, removing her gym bag from the deep depths of her shiny blue locker. The colour reminded her of Roscoe as well as the collar she bought for Roxy when she was younger. This school always managed to make her feel young somehow. With all of the lacrosse essentials inside the bag, it was heavy, but nevertheless she pushed Theo back when he tried to help, slinging it over her right shoulder.
"You don't have anything now." Scott told her, thinking she must have forgotten.
" Lacrosse auditions are today, or am I mistaken?" At her questioning remark and the befuddlement that flashed over Robin and Batman, Theo laughed.
Scott had always wanted her to aspire to do what she wanted, and although lacrosse was a lethal sport, he decided he wouldn't stop her from doing anything unless she was in literal danger. It was better than him being the obstacle that blocked her hopes or removed her opportunities.
"What number are you wanting Max?"
"My favourite." She answered, smiling at the encouragement he was giving her, even if it contained mixed uncertainty.
"22." Scott spoke factually, mirroring her facial expression. He was happy for her. Coach would reserve that number just for her, everyone was aware.
