"Heart rate"

There was still a light bruise haunting her side, but other than that, she was all good. Finally, she was healed enough to play lacrosse again. She came into school with a smile on her face, heading to where Stiles was talking Theo's ear off. Scott was at her side, them having left home and arrived together.

"It didn't bite you, did it?" Stiles interrogated Theo.

"We've been over this Stiles, I stayed in the car."

"Good, I don't want to deal with another teen wolf." His hand clasped dramatically against his own chest, exhaling in relief. Scott frowned at his choice of words, figuring out what they were discussing.

"Theo knows?" He accused Stiles, making his sister bite her lip from the turn of events.

"He saw the alpha Scott, on his way to yours last night." The werewolf's head retracted to the news. He had been out getting groceries, when Derek appeared, and to start off with he had thought it was the alpha. But that wasn't all he didn't know.

"Why were you on your way to mine?" He could be clueless, they all knew, but Stiles had the most experience with it. It took him a while to even admit that he was a werewolf.

"Oh my god!" Stiles said, disappointed with his lack of knowledge and sometimes logic. "He wanted to make out with your sister!" The hallway had gone silent after he had practically shouted that, drawing all eyes on them. Theo shrunk back against a locker, embarrassed by what Stiles had revealed. Max blushed heavily, not liking the attention one bit.

"You broke the rules, again." Scott sighed. Maxine found this hypocritical as he had been doing the same in order to spend time with Allison.

"Just be happy he wasn't going there to make out with you."

"Let me reiterate that." Theo knew Max's words weren't helping, so he decided to say something instead. "No making out was done." His words didn't help, as both of the other boys knew it was only because he was in shock. If he hadn't seen it, there'd have been nothing to stop them from doing following through with their plans.

His heart rate picked up, measured by the monitor, as Stiles pelted lacrosse balls at him. He was useless in defending himself as his hands were tied behind his back.

"When is it my turn?" Max asked, wanting to contribute to the abuse. She saw this as perfect revenge for the minor injury that he had inflicted upon her. Maxine and Theo watched from a distance, but still close enough so that they didn't see Jackson or his amusement.

"Scott. You started to change." Stiles had ignored her plea, focused on the matter at hand rather than her vengeance.

"I'm angry. But it was more than that - I think the angrier I got, the stronger I felt."

"I'd get pretty agitated if someone was throwing stuff at me." Theo understood, shifting his weight from one foot to another. He now felt included, and safe, despite being aware of the horrors they were and would face.

"So it is anger, then. Derek's right." Maxine never thought she would hear Stiles agree with Derek. It was a miracle, similarly to not having to amputate Derek's arm.

"I can't be around Allison." Scott stated, admitting the truth.

"Just because he makes you happy?"

"Because she makes me weak." Maxine and Theo knew what that weakness felt like, but neither of them would risk letting it go. They had no reason to... yet.

Scott's yowl made Maxine shake her head. That wasn't enough to draw the alpha out and reveal himself, or possibly herself. They didn't know who was behind these murders, but Derek had the suspicion of Deaton. Sure, he was a suspicious guy, seeming to always know more than he let on, but he never struck her as dangerous.

The thought of seeing the alpha again made Theo's hands shake. He became more worried when Scott managed to howl an echoing chorus, having damned faith that it had worked.

"I won't let anything happen to you." She couldn't make promises, but she could try her best. Taking his jittering hands in her own, she soothed their movement, calming her boyfriend. "We don't even know if it'll show."

As they went outside, Derek began to speak to them. Deaton had vanished, making Max rethink her image of him. Whenever she had spoken to him, he appeared content with his job, but maybe he had a smaller more secretive one, like one that involved a murder spree. Derek's judgement had the ability to cloud her own, after all he knew more than any of them.

A nocturnal force lifted Derek up, its claws in his back, before he discarded the werewolf's body upon the ground. Max's mouth gaped in shock, not only was the alpha here, but it killed Derek. Scott dragged her back as they hurried inside, taking cover from the creature. He wouldn't let her get hurt, she was his sister. If anything were to happen to her, he would only be able to blame himself.
