They had arrived, Theo had driven them having borrowed his sister's car. He didn't intend on drinking, especially not around the kind of people who were attending this bash, he had to look after Maxine and drive them both home afterwards. But there was already an issue; they didn't know that Scott would be here.
"What are you doing here Max?" The girl alongside Maxine's brother tried to calm him down. If he blew, especially now, it would not be fun for any of the guests. "You should be at home."
"I was invited." She informed him, noticing that Jackson was paying attention to the ongoing quarrel. He was across the yard, but his blue irises sent shivers down her spine. It wasn't him himself, it was the thought that something would eventually happen to him. She couldn't make predictions, but the feeling told her that it was nothing good. "If it makes you happy, I won't drink. I'll be entirely in control of my words and actions." Although she would be, the same couldn't be said for Scott. the full moon was taking a toll on him.
"Just go!" He exclaimed in her face, causing Theo to wrap his arm in front of her and drag her slowly backwards.
Maxine had never been treated this way by Scott. There was a bigger impact at play which triggered him, and it had scared her a bit. It made her feel like a smaller part in his life. She no longer had knowledge of everything, not even the brunette girl's name.
"Don't worry Scott, we're leaving." Theo made the decision for her, despite them just having arrived. He was worried about Scott, but if he expressed his concern he knew he would get his head bitten off like Maxine had. With one glance at Scott, he turned his girlfriend away, leading her to the borrowed car. "Where do you want to go?" Before he pulled out of the packed driveway, he ensured she had fastened her seat belt, not being ignorant to the decrease of her mood.
"Home." It was only above a whisper. She tucked her arms around herself, allowing her hair to create a shield around her face. Her mind told her it'd be stupid to cry, so she blinked back the tears, letting them dry as they stayed in her eyes.
Both of them were situated in Maxine's room, Theo was laid flat on his back while Maxine was hunched over, hugging her own knees. He had never seen her in such a quiet, solitary state. Scott's words, although not meant, struck a nerve.
"Dad shouted at me before he left." She told him, aware that she could confide in him. He allowed her to have his privacy, knowing that her past trust issues could kick her into fight or flight mode any second. "The last thing he did was shout at me." With her insecurities rising to the surface, Maxine looked to Theo, reassuring herself that he hadn't left her.
"I get that." He murmured, contently as she allowed him to invade her space and brush his fingers through her hair. She leaned into his body, enjoying the comfort he permitted. "My dad does that sometimes, which is why I often come here. You make me feel safe, and happy. Him and my mum want me to be more like Tara."
"Is that why you don't want me to meet them?" Maxine received a gentle nod. Her head tilted up so that she could take in everything they may have seen as an imperfection, but her eyes could find no flaws. "Then in that case, I don't want to meet them."
"And that is exactly why I love you." He admitted, shocking Maxine with his vocabulary. Those words were supposed to be so nerve wrecking, yet Theo said them so naturally. It made her heart flutter, so she turned to him as he awaited her response.
"I love you too." She told him, becoming fascinated with how his whole face lit up with four words.
Scott's bathroom door slammed, Theo emphasising it by prodding her back. "I think you should go and speak to your brother." As much as she didn't want to in this moment, she knew it'd be best because that's what her boyfriend thought.
"You just had to ruin the moment, didn't you?" She smiled at him as she spoke lightly, indicating that it was not meant in a literal way. With a quick, supple kiss shared between the lovers, she left, sneaking a peak behind her at the lovesick boy.
Opening the door of Scott's room, she was met with a Stiles. One that was sitting on the floor, admitting failure. He was alone, Scott had presumably left.
"Where'd he go?"
"Out the window." She hoped that this was one of his jokes, but Stiles was being honest. "He went to Allison." So that was her name, Allison.
"Is he okay?" Her gasp made him raise his face, alerting him that she should know what was under the same roof as her.
"He's something." He grimly admitted, reminiscing guiltily about all of the werewolf references he had made prior to finding out the truth.
"He's a what?" As far as she knew, he was a teenage boy with asthma. Ordinary. Many people she attended school with suffered the same, including Theo.
"A fricking werewolf." She paced, shaking her head, truly concerned for her brother.
"That's not funny Stiles." Scolding him did nothing, he was adamant that was Scott's condition.
"He was bit. I know you noticed your stock of bandages in your bathroom cabinet vanish. That's what he used to cover the wound, but then he healed and he didn't need them anymore." It was true, they had gone. The only reason she even had them was because she used to trip a lot, having been born the clumsy child out of the two. "And that's how he made first line! It wasn't luck, it was the supernatural, Max. Your brother is affected by a full moon, which so happens to be tonight."
That all made sense, in a sort of odd and peculiar way. Maxine didn't want to think creatures of the night were real, but maybe she had to. Her mind wouldn't be made up for certain until she had some solid evidence, however for now she had put on a new mindset.
"I believe you."
