The house was quiet, Scott having gone out to get groceries, and Melissa asleep after her hard and long shifts at the hospital. Maxine remained awake, checking the time as she looked out the window. He was late. Theo should have been here 45 minutes ago.
In overdue time, he arrived. But he was shaken, and did not know what to say. What could he say?
"What happened?" Her question was simple, but the explanation was not. All he could see in his line of sight was too glowing red orbs. They had been attached to a monster, one that was bigger than a bear. It was too complex of an answer to think was real.
"There was something in the road." His answer was vague, not wanting to be thought of as crazy. It had watched him, glaring at his headlights until he had turned them off. Then it ran in the direction of the reserve, presumably heading for its home. There was no animal he had seen before alike to it, and he wasn't even sure it was an animal.
"What was in the road Theo?" Maxine's gut churned at the thought of what it might have been. Lydia and Jackson had watched it in place of The Notebook, so there was a chance the beast was that 'something'.
"I don't know." His voice wavered from remembering the trauma. "But it's got me thinking a mountain lion hasn't been the thing killing people."
"What colour were its eyes?" That was a definite feature of the monster, one no one had forgotten. They were prominent, piercing into its victims and whoever it passed by.
"Red. A glowing red." Although Maxine hadn't didn't have the expertise of seeing it like a few others, however that description only confirmed her suspicion.
"The alpha."
"The what?" He didn't know what she was talking about, but she clearly knew something about the thing that had delayed his arrival.
"An alpha. A werewolf who has the ability to create other werewolves." He seemed unconvinced, Maxine rubbed her forehead in thought of how to tell him the truth. "We agreed not to tell you, we didn't want to drag you into this, you have enough on your plate."
"Werewolves aren't real." Theo was adamant on this.
"That wasn't an animal Theo, it was a person who turned into that thing! It turned Scott into a werewolf, and is killing all of those people."
"Scott's a werewolf?" The idea was absurd, he tried not to believe it. But the anger, the athleticism, the strength all only served as evidence. "That's insane."
"You think I'm crazy?"
"Of course not. I think werewolves being real is crazy, but I'm not opposed to the idea." And now he knew.
