Breaking curfew wasn't a plan that Maxine had in mind, but it was the only way that she could attend the date. If she didn't show, Lydia would not let her hear the end of it, and that was the last thing that she wanted.
Scott was disappointing the family name, and Max was aware she would only do the same. She liked lacrosse, but not this.
"You're up mini McCall." Jackson informed her, watching with a smirk as she slowly stepped away from the cluster of teenagers. With regret written on her face, Max thought it'd have been best after all if she had just stayed home. She was only going to embarrass herself. Picking up a purple bowling ball, she winced as the weight affected her side. This was really not a good idea.
The impact of the weight was diminished as someone supported her grip with their own. They had big hands and smelled of a familiar deodorant, making them instantly recognisable to Maxine. It was no other than Theo.
"Remember, they already know that you can't bowl. You admitted it, so there's nothing to worry about." He swayed her right arm, getting her used to the motion. "Scott however, he's another story."
"It's a McCall thing; the inability to bowl." Their arms' span increased, until they released the object. It ended up toppling three pins at the left side over, making the layout remain the same instead of refreshing itself.
"Well I think you did a pretty good job." He told her, before they sat down and waited his turn.
Scott had proved himself a fool, until Allison decided to motivate him. Maxine didn't want to know what she had said that fueled him.
Theo's head leaned back, tired of listening to Whittemore. He was trying to get him to think of joining the lacrosse team, but the boy wasn't interested. He'd rather watch his friends on the field than be on it with them. When it was finally his turn to roll the sphere, he couldn't be happier. With his green eyes squinted, focalising on the full row of pins, he thought of things that brewed frustration. The first thing was Jackson, he was arrogant and sometimes disrespectful to girls. Scott upsetting Maxine made his nostrils flare, hot air exiting them. Then there was the main attraction; his parents. They never tried to understand him, but judged him nonetheless. Their attitude made him feel alienated from what was supposed to be a family, which is why he found the McCall's closer to what a family should be.
The pins stood, until they all fell. Theo's rage had whisked them off of their balance, impressing the small crowd that was watching him. Their screaming didn't make him feel anything, it was mostly Lydia who was clearly trying to tick off her boyfriend. When he turned around, he saw a cheekful smile on Maxine's face. She was the only one he wanted to make proud. She was his main priority. It was a McCall thing.
