The janitor doesn't listen to them, promptly finding their facts to be nothing but lies. Little to his knowledge, they weren't. Max couldn't blame his rash assumption, but now they needed him to believe them more than ever.
"We're screwed." Theo admitted, gasping and taking more than a step back as blood smothered the changing room's window. He had been torn to shreds, his regretful screams indicating so. They all ran, wanting to be as far away from the deadly beast as possible and survive the night. There was a chance they wouldn't, the alpha was here for Scott, not them.
"You don't say." Stiles panted, going towards another possible exit, only to find the door stuck.
"It's not stupid." Theo said, having found intellect in the alpha's plan to trap them. It had blocked the exit with a dumpster, something they were all weak to be able to move.
"This is trash, literally." Maxine sighed, without intending to use a pun.
They continued on through the school, hoping that they would find a way to no longer be mice trapped in a maze. It was messing with them, and Maxine was on the edge of pulling out her hair. She felt as though she was going insane.
They walked down the hallway that she often passed through when going to class. At night it gave her the chills, and not only because she was cold. She could see the moon lingering from afar, acting as a bat symbol for the murderous werewolf. And she also saw it. The alpha was walking along a roof, letting its snout inhale the breeze outside.
Stiles held a torch, and so did Theo. The only difference was that Theo kept his aimed at the ground. He didn't want to alert anything of their whereabouts. Stiles however let the electronic beam glower where it pleased, including against the large panes. It acted as a beacon, allowing the alpha to see them in its shine, encouraging it to come after them, smashing through the glass to do so.
Her heart sped up as she ran. Maxine ran behind the boys, Theo and Scott attempting to pull her arms to keep her alongside them as they were faster. But it was all too late. Just before she was able to follow them down the flight of stairs, she heard a crunch and felt the worse pain that she had ever experienced. It caused a burn against her ankle, and dread to enter her bloodstream. What would she become? Something she didn't want, that was for sure.
Scott's 'friends' had arrived. All due to a text that was sent from the phone he no longer had. It really was smarter than they all gave it credit for. Or 'Derek' as Stiles said. Blaming a dead man was low, even for him.
Scott's sister stood in a dark corner, not socialising with anyone. She wanted to be alone, Theo realised. After Scott fleeing to go after the alpha, she must've been more concerned. He didn't know to what extent though.
"Max?" He went closer to the girl, who only winced in reply. "We'll get out." He stated, hoping that would give her some closure.
When his words didn't work, he gently pulled her arms so that she was looking at him. Her head lowered when she saw his face, glancing down at the building of blood through her jeans. There were even teeth marks which stapled themselves as a reminder.
"I got bitten." She whispered, when Theo also looked below her face at her ankle. "I'm going to turn into a monster."
"You could never be a monster." His hand brushed the side of her face, pushing the hair that had fallen out of the way. "I'll help you, I'll do anything. You don't have to be scared, I'll protect you."
"How Theo? It's impossible to reverse this. There's no cure, Scott and Stiles searched for one. It doesn't exist. I'm going to be forced to live with myself and whatever I do."
"A full moon won't scare me away, neither will glowing eyes, claws or sharp teeth. I'm here for the long run Maxine."
Melissa hugged her daughter, tears held in her eyes. She was happy to see that both of her children had survived a night running from a killer. They were strong. They were special. As she looked over her mother's shoulder, she saw Theo being forced in a car by his parents. They didn't seem all that happy. She wished she could soothe that pain, but her own came first.
