It was just after midnight on October 31, now technically the very early morning of November 1, when Sirius was alerted of what had happened in Godric's Hollow. He immediately jumped onto his flying motorcycle and fly as fast as he could to the location he had been given to see if it was true, and felt a wave of nausea as the house, half in ruins, stared back at him.

"JAMES! LILY!" He yelled, running past the fence and into the house, the front door had been knocked from it's hinges. Following the path of destruction, he came to the stairs, stopping dead in his tracks when he saw a body lying on it.

The body of his best friend.

"No..." He whimpered, slowly lowering himself down next to the man who had basically been his brother. James Potter had been his first real friend. The first person who truly cared about him and the first person he truly cared about too. He had taken him under this wing at school, picked him up when his family beat him down, and even let him come live with him when they were sixteen.

"No... James, no." Tears from his eyes fell onto James' still body. He slowly stood, forcing himself to leave his friend and continue up the stairs. He and Hagrid has a job to do, Dumbledore had said, to get to the house before any of the Muggles do. So questions couldn't be raised.

He gasped when he reached the top of the stairs, staring in horror at what once was the nursery. The roof and outer wall had nearly been completely ripped away and there was nothing in the room that wasn't broken.

Lily Potter was lying in the middle of the room, between the doorway and overturned crib, her green eyes as vacant as her husbands.

"Lily..." Sirius breathed. He went to kneel next to her body when a small cry pierced the night coming from the other side of the crib.

No. Sirius thought. That's impossible.

He ran around Lily's body and the crib and saw little Harry, just over three years old, sitting on the floor with his six month year old sister lying on his lap.

"Shhh is otay Alwi." Harry was whispering, though there were tears falling down his own cheeks. He held his sister close and rocked her, trying to calm the upset baby down.

Harry wide green eyes lifted to Sirius when the man knelt beside them, gently running his thumb just under the lightning shaped scar on Harry's forehead.

"Sirwus!" Harry's face lit up and he held up his chubby little hands to his godfather.

"It's okay." Sirius whispered, lifting Harry up with one arm while cradling Alison with the other, the physical comfort of being pressed against his chest enough to calm the baby down for now. "I'm gonna get you out of here." He whispered to the children, turning when Hagrid stepped into the doorway.

"James he..." Hagrid blubbered through his tears. "And Lily... You-Know-Who must've-" The half-giant stooped when his eyes landed on the children in Sirius' arms. "How did they... but I thought he was coming to kill Harry? How is he-?"

Sirius shook his head. "I don't know. But we need to get them to Hogwarts as soon as we can, the Muggles are going to be here any minute."

Hagrid nodded and followed Sirius out of the house and to the motorcycle. With a wave of his wand, the motorcycle grew to accommodate Hagrid's size and a side car appeared on the side, so Sirius could safely hold onto the children.

As they flew away Harry's eyes fluttered closed, his head burrowed into the man's shoulder, unaware of just how tragic the night's events had been. And how significantly was about to change his life.

The trip to Hogwarts seemed much longer than it truly was as Sirius was caught up in his thoughts. Where was Voldemort now? Why had James and Lily been killed when it was Harry he'd been after? Sirius knew they had given their lives to protect their son, he didn't doubt that for second, but if Voldemort had killed them, why hadn't he killed the children as well? Especially Harry as he had been the one the dark wizard had been after?
