Chapter 3

Daniel sank his head in his hands. His thoughts were a whirlpool of regret and thought. The waiting room, he decided, wasn't for waiting. It would slowly drown your soul as you waited in suspense. His ears were shut except for the ocassional thump of Kate's foot on the floor. It sounded like a deep drum vibrato, that echoed through his head, making the time pass slower. He turned to look at her profile, perfectly drawn, beautiful.

He was sure he had seen Kate somewhere else, he just wasn't sure where. Her profile seemed so familiar...

A shout interrupted Daniel's thoughts.

"HER HEARTRATE IS DROPPING! SHE'S NOT RESPONDING TO THE MEDICATION!"

Daniel stood up as a scretcher was violently jerked out of the medical examination room, nurses crowding around it. The girl was lying on it, her face paler than when they had hauled her out of the cold water.

"GET ME A DOCTOR, NOW!"

Kate was on her feet next to him, they both started running behind the stretcher. Beau and Jai stayed behind, their eyes wide and scared. James and Riddhi ran up behind them, Riddhi had both her hands on her mouth. Luke was beside Daniel and Kate, his feet trailing one in front of the other, keeping the rhythm steady.

A middle aged man with a white robe emerged from another room, holding the door for the stretcher to be able to pass. The girl's body jerked furiously side to side with every movement that the nurses did. In the man's hands were two metal squares, held together by a curly wire. They were plastic on one side and platinum metal on the other.

The doctor ran inside with the nurses, forgetting to shut the door. Kate arrived first, peeking as she saw the scene unraveling. The girl had an oxygen mask on, her hair was a knotted mess and was still damp from the river. Her eyes were closed, her skin was chalk pale and she looked sort of peaceful. She looked dead.

Luke pushed against Kate to make space for him to peek as well. They watched as a needle was inserted in the girl's wrist, and it was wired to a pouch hanging from above. The pouch was filled with blood, that pumped into her body. The red liquid drained into her arteries, that shone over her almost transparent ghostly skin.

"GET ME 1,000 VOLTS ON THE DEFRIBRILLATOR!" The doctor rubbed the two squares together, and they emitted white sparks.

"3, 2, 1, CLEAR!" The metal crashed against the girl's chest, and she jerked upward. The dreaded beep of no heartbeat answered them again. Daniel's heart burst against his chest.

The debrillator's squares were rubbed together again. "CLEAR!" The doctor repeated, his hands flodding with unharmful sparks that hit his skin. The metal was placed on her chest again, making her body fly upwards again. Long beep.

Daniel found himself inside the room, his hands were gripping the edge of the stretcher. The doctors paid no attention to him, they were too concentrated on their job. Kate was beside him, and he could see her lips trembling. He was taller than her, so he could easily slide her in a hug and place his chin on her head. But he didn't. He just stood there and watched as the life slipped away from an unknown stranger he had risked his life to save.

Kate's profile was strong yet her strength was slipping away, leaving a gap of weakness and sadness. Daniel did not know what to do, he didn't have much experience in this sort of situation. He was also doubting himself. But, nevertheless, some instinct in him gave his hand a sudden urge to slip into Kate's. He found himself holding hands with a beautiful girl in front of a soul trying to leave a body.

"CLEAR!" The doctor sounded desperate as he yelled. The girl flew upwards, as if possessed by a strange demon. Her eyes were shut, and her skin seemed even paler under the harsh light. The dreaded long beep followed their failed attempts.

Luke stood beside Daniel and Kate, his face expressionless.

Beep.

Silence.

Beep.

Nothing.

An animal instinct seemed to wash over Luke. He ran towards the stretcher, pushing the nurses aside with violent forces. His brown eyes were wild. The doctor and the nurses tried to pull him back away from the girl, unsuccessfully. Something inside him had let go of his primal instincts. His hair was blown into a tangled mess, giving him a caveman air. The doctor had him by Luke's arm, clutching him so hard he left red marks on his skin.

He gripped the girl by the shoulders, and shaked her violently. "WAKE UP! WAKE UP! WE SAVED YOU, YOU IDIOT! JUST WAKE UP! YOU CANNOT DIE, NOT NOW! WE SAVED YOU... WE..." his scream died slowly, and turned into a quiet sob. He looked down at the girl's chest, that was red with all the volts she had received.

"We... we... saved... you..." Luke whispered, his voice breaking. "We... we... swam... you... just... no... no... no." he was trembling with a mixture of anger and sadness. His eyes were closed shut, he was forcing not to think he had just let somebody die.

"Please.."

Silence.

Isa was alone in the darkness, again. She had her face between her knees, her eyes closed. She was crying silently. She could feel the air closing on her, pushing her head side to side. Her thoughts were a mix of relief and sadness. She knew she'd be alone forever. But wasn't it better than the Hell of a reality she lived day to day? Maybe. Her wrists were numb again, and she knew the cuts would never scar.

Her hands were over her ears on the side of her head. She pulled her hair, slowly and silently agonizing every minute. The tears streamed furiously down her cheeks, like acid to her being. She was suffering again, like she did every day. Only nobody cared enough to ask about how she felt. People saw her cuts and called her that word she knew all too well.

Freak...

Isa couldn't hear anything, only the soft vibrations of the environment, the dark aloneness that surrounded her in infinite darkness. She did not know what to do. She was damned to be like this forever. She brought this on herself.

She gave up. She stopped struggling. She ended it all.

But it felt...

Before she could think of anything else, something hit her, like a rock on her face. She did not know what but she could physically feel it. A slap. A drop of cold water. Something. She took her hands off her ears, and that's when she heard it.

A soft whisper, in the distance.

Please...

Isa did not know the voice, it was unfamiliar. Yet something about it, something, made her entire body shudder. She stood up in the darkness and walked. Slowly. Steadily. She had no idea where she was going only that maybe there was hope to all this misery. Maybe. Just maybe. Her slow walk broke into a run as her tears began to cry. She was cold.

Her body moved softly as the doubt began to slow down. Her life had been a nightmare, wasn't this what she had wished for? She knew nobody would miss her right now. She knew she had done right in escaping reality before her time. To wait for an old and ancient end, probably in a hospital, crumbling to pieces and shuddering? No. She didn't have the time to waste on that. She had wanted to end it. Yet it felt wrong...

But didn't she want to be dead?

She didn't have time to think about an answer, though, because she was pulled into a light. A white soft light. She could feel rain on her face. She could feel snow. Warmth. Cold. Sunlight. Darkness. All in one emotion. How was that possible? Even she couldn't answer herself. Her body shuddered and trembled, pulled and jerked upward, but she felt numb. Nothing. As she always did.

Then, she saw a face.
