Luke could almost see her smiling. That is, if she was awake. The girl was curled up in a ball, a white blanket covering her shuddering body. Her hair was still damp from the river and it was knotted into giant balls of hair, but she was alive. In his hand, he clutched the list with hope that she would accept it. It felt weird holding someone's life in your hands, especially if you almost let them die. The girl shuffled from time to time, making soft rustling sounds.
What remained invisible to him, though, was her mind. That dismal place full of things that would scare normal humans by the instant. Thoughts of murder, suicide and the most gruesome things that you could think of. Monsters that whispered things into her head, making her go insane sometimes. But people couldn't see that, because she hid it so well.
Luke placed his head between his warm hands and sighed. He watched her as she slowly moved to the right, but in reality, he felt nothing. Nothing.
"We're letting her out today."
Luke turned to face a middle aged nurse, who had a piece of paper in her hands. She had an almost apologetic look on her face.
"She's recovered enough to be on her own."
Luke looked at her then back at the girl, who was pale and coughing. He turned back towards the nurse as if she had just said something insane. The girl screamed suddenly, which scared him intensely, and he stood up like a rocket.
"You've got to be kidding me." He answered the nurse in an unbelievable tone. "She's still barely alive, man!"
"She doesn't have insurance." The nurse shrugged as if it was an everyday thing. Luke looked at her with wide incredulous eyes, the brown in them gleaming unbelievably. He had an expression as he was about to flip a table.
"So, she's dying, but you're gonna let her die because she can't pay a fucking hospital room?"
"Hey, hey calm down." The nurse handed him a paper, but she ignored his question. "So, you're her boyfriend?"
"No, I don't know her." Luke looked at her as if she had just swallowed a snake.
"Ugh, well you're with her, so sign these anyways." She extended a pen and the paper, which Luke snatched out of her hand. He was biting his lip to not scream at her. It had been a long time since he had last been this enraged.
He signed the papers without paying much attention to what they said. The pen slid up and down, forming the words in perfect calligraphy. The white slips of paper slid through his hands, as he tried to finish as fast as he could. The pen ran switfly through the white paper. Luke extended them as he was done, with an angry face.
"Done." The nurse smiled fakely at him and started to get close to the girl to wake her up.
"I'll do it." Luke objected, as he placed himself between the nurse's hand and the sleeping girl, that mumbled to herself.
"Okay, but you'll have to leave in 10 min." She looked at her nails as if she had nothing better to do than kick people out from the hospital. "We changed her into her clothes last night."
"Get lost, bitch." Luke shot back at her, but she just rolled her eyes as if she had heard worse, and left.
He turned to the girl, who was still asleep even if it was 12 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. She looked so peaceful yet scared at the same time. He sort of felt bad about waking her up in such a rush, but if he didn't, they'd probably wake her up in a more violent fashion.
"Hey." He shook her softly, but she only mumbled. "Hey." He tried again, this time with a slight more tad of force. She started to slightly open her eyes, and she rubbed them.
