Jai Brooks had never experienced such adrenaline in his life. His hair was wet, he was shivering and freezing, the cold air slapped him in the face, but he was more worried about the girl that he, his brothers and his friends had dragged out of the river. Her body was heavy with water absorbed by her clothes, and her eyes were closed.
James hauled her onto the pavement, the surface scratching against her back. He was breathing heavily and slowly. His hair had been messed up the the upcoming waves, and bits of frost nestled on its tips. But he was much too busy checking the girl's pulse to notice. His fingers slipped onto her neck, to check her heart rate. His expression turned to worry as he tried again, unsuccessfully. He then turned to her wrist, but instead of checking, he just looked at it.
Parallel cuts were aligned horizontally across it, red and deep. They were almost touching, perfectly formed. They looked as if she had used something sharp to do them, and James just looked at them in disbelief. He turned to Jai.
"Why do people do this to themselves?" he asked him, his eyes sad.
"I don't know..." Jai answered, his mind drifting off again.
Beau punched numbers in his phone, calling an ambulance. A crowd had formed around the girl's body. Their eyes, though, were looking at her as if she was some sort of animal. Jai could see the gleam in their eyes, that they were not nice people.
"Freak..." someone muttered in the crowd.
Luke turned protectively towards the girls body, shielding her from the rain of hurtful comments. The clouds had started to form in the sky, a gigantic grey cluster growing massively. Jai could see a young girl peeking from behind the crowd, her brown eyes curious. She was the only one who didn't have that cruel sparkle in her eyes, on the contrary, she was beautiful.
Beau nodded with his ear on his phone. His eyebrows met in a worried gaze, his eyes darting from side to side. He seemed to lock eyes with the girl for a moment, but shook his head and snapped back to reality. He placed his phone back in his pocket and sighed.
"Ambulance is on the way." he informed Luke, whom was still using his body as a human shield. "Does she have pulse?" the dreaded question hung in the air.
James was silent.
"Does she?!" Daniel asked him, nearly pulling his hair out.
Luke, Beau, Daniel and Jai were now staring at him intently.
He still didn't answer.

Kate and Riddhi were sprinting over the bridge, towards the east side. Their feet moved as fast as they could, and they panted with heavy breaths. Their hair flew back with the cold wind, like flags made of soft silk. Riddhi went a little ahead, her feet going one in front of the other, and repeating. Her glasses were tilted to the side, the air pushing them down with the help of gravity.
Their hearts beat against their ribs as they came to the other side of the bridge. They thudded in both the girls' chests as they arrived at a formed crowd, a half circle around the pavement at the edge of the river. They arrived panting, with sweat forming on their foreheads and then freezing, sticking to their soft skin.
A siren was heard in the distance, announcing the loud arrival of a white ambulance. People began to disperse and walk away from the scene, leaving just enough space for Kate to peek her head out between them. She saw a young guy shielding the girl's body, as if someone was about to attack. Kate turned her gaze and saw two guys arguing.
