It was pouring rain outside the wooden house.
They were all cuddled up against each other, with gigantic thick velvet blankets covering them, all in front of a TV that played some sort of scary movie involving a possessed little girl that killed families that lived in an old victorian style house. Riddhi jumped once in a while, muttering that she was not used to horror movies and that they should have put on the Notebook or Toy Story instead. But minutes after, she was watching intensely the TV, much to Jai's amusement, he smiled at her randomness.
Becca and Kate were mindlessly looking at the TV, but only Kate had Daniel playing with her hair and ruffling it up at occasional times. Beau had his head on Becca's lap and was snoring softly, because he was tired out of a day of beach, beer, sun and junk food. James and Karigan were wrapped together in a burrito of warmth inside a velvet blanket. Luke was sitting next to Isa, both of them beneath the same blanket, but his head was softly tilted towards her.
James was starting to fall asleep on Karigan's shoulder, and she couldn't mind less. As he tilted his head and met her shoulder beneath his face, he began to blush softly and to think what would it feel like to fall asleep on her everyday.
As James fantasized, the rain fell heavily on the beach and the roof, making a hollow sound that echoed around the room and house. It was as if someone was crying from above, shedding tears that fell on wood and pumping hearts.
Maybe it was because they knew that tonight everything ended.
And that a life was to be claimed.
Jai got comfy with Riddhi as she calmed herself for the hundredth time, and, before anyone of them noticed, all of them were fast asleep in each other's arms.
Time passed, and hour or two. Maybe three. It became dark and cold in the rain outside.
The TV kept on playing some series about a girl and her family after the scary movie was over, but none of them were paying attention, because they were fast asleep. All of them, snoring cozily under the warm air that enveloped them all in a hug. Each one was dreaming of the other, thinking about the way the people around them made them feel at home.
However, Isa dealt with nightmares.
She was being chased, by some demon she saw everywhere. She could feel her feet moving faster and faster under her weight, she was panting because she knew she'd get nowhere. Her heart beat faster and faster and she heard crazed laughter from behind, that sent chills diving on her bones. She tasted salt on her lips.
Before she knew it, she was turning around, slowly and carefully. Everything seemed in slow motion, her breathing, the laughter and her heartbeat. The air around her froze as she seemed to fall backwards, backfirst, into the empty and vast space. She felt cold air enveloping her and suddenly she couldn't breathe. Everything was cold. Her skin went pale. Her sweat froze. She clawed at the emptyness and her neck, but nothing seemed to work. She felt the life fleeing her body.
And a gunshot ran in the air.
Isa woke up with her eyes wide open and her heart pounding against her ribs.
Everything had felt so... real.
She realized Luke had fallen asleep on her shoulder, so she wouldn't be able to escape easily. He was snoring softly, occasionally moving his body as he dreamt of something unknown. She knew she shouldn't be here, and she needed to get out, not caring about the pouring rain. She slid her shoulder softly, as she replaced herself with a pillow.
It seemed to work, so she went on with it. She slid herself softly and carefully, until the pillow was placed perfectly and Luke kept on snoring and occasionally groaned and muttered something. She sighed with relief and tiptoed herself around the room, walking to the other side triumphantly, not making a single sound.
