A car stops in front of your house, so you look out the window to watch Jaebeom take your drunk brother out of the passenger seat. With your parents out of town to visit your grandparents for two weeks, Jackson takes every chance he can get to get wasted. This means you get to meet Jaebeom on the front door every night, so he can transfer your stupid brother to your shoulders.
"There you go," he says as soon as Jackson clings to you for support. You grit your teeth, hating how foul he smells and how he dares to be the baby in the house. If anything, you should be the one on the rebellious stage. Jackson is almost graduating college, for goodness sake.
"Thank you," you tell Jaebeom while fixing Jackson's arm on your shoulder. "Do you want to come in to get something to drink?"
"Nah, I'm good. I'll just go," Jaebeom says with a small smile.
He closes the door behind him, leaving you to deal with your drunk brother. You don't want to waste energy taking him upstairs to his bed, so you stumble to the living room and gently throw him to the couch.
"Sis," Jackson grumbles as you massage your shoulder.
"No. You decided to get this drunk, so I will not help you. Deal with it yourself."
"Sister!"
You scoff, but stand firm on your decision. It's about time your brother realizes how stupid it is to get drunk again even before his hangover from last night subsides. You walk away to lock the front door before going up to your room.
You almost run to the window after getting in. You can still see the car outside. You put your window up and whistle a special tune.
An answer comes, so you give one last look at the mirror before climbing down the tree beside your window.
Before you touch the ground, you feel hands holding your hips firmly, so you let go and let yourself be carried down.
"Whoa there," Jaebeom says, gently putting you down your feet.
"Hi," you greet and tiptoe to give him a peck.
Of course, Jackson isn't the only troublemaker in the family.
--
Jaebeom takes you to Hangang, where you've been your late-night outs. He has his car stereo playing music you both enjoy, the reason why you become closer. You never really meant to be this close to your brother's friend. One minute you were talking about how underrated an artist is, the next you're making out in the kitchen, the risk of being caught by your brother fueling the fire in between you two.
"Jackson's pretty drunk. Does that mean we can stay here until maybe two?"
You roll your eyes. "Breaking rules means breaking things, Jaebeom. I told you that."
"I already broke rule number one by dating you in secret."
"That's on you. My brother never told me not to date any of you."
"Yeah, he only told you not to keep secrets from him."
"I'm not going to be his baby forever."
"Yes. I kinda like you as my baby right now."
You giggle. People find themselves intimidated by Jaebeom, and such words would have made them a puddle. But after knowing him through your brother's stories and spending nights doing crazy things with him, you know better than be affected by his cool façade.
"You're the baby here, dumdum. Who was whining about not finding strawberry milk at the convenience store just now, huh?"
"Oh, speaking of! Come on, let's go out. I want to buy shikhye on the vending machine."
See, baby.
You follow him out of the car, skipping so you can jump onto his back. Jaebeom catches you swiftly, hoisting you into a more comfortable position before carrying you to the vending machine. You help him put the money in and choose his drink. You go down when he needs to get his drink and you settle to the nearest bench hand in hand.
"Look, the moon looks brighter tonight. We don't need to turn your headlights on," you point at the sky, head resting on Jaebeom's wide shoulder. There's something intimate about being under the night sky with no one else around, talking about everything and nothing with the your favourite boy.
"That's why I like coming home whenever I can. The moon in the city isn't as pretty as here."
You smile, albeit sadly. Right, he isn't actually from here. He only comes home every summer or winter vacation, but most of the year, he's far away, living his life as a professional. You're stuck in this small town because your parents wouldn't let you out of their sight until you finish your studies. "Until when will you be here again?"
"I'll go in a week."
"That sucks. We haven't even gone on a date in broad daylight."
"You can always come to the city to visit me. Or I can come here on the weekends and I can take you out."
"What about Jackson?"
He sighs. "That's our only problem in the end, right? What about Jackson? Can you tell him that you're seeing me?"
"Can you tell him that you're seeing me?"
Jaebeom drinks his shikhye to the last drop before answering. "If you're ready for a year worth of sulking, we can do it."
You can just imagine how betrayed Jackson will seem. He will not talk to you for a week or more. He will most likely give JB a punch if he finds out how many bases you've crossed before you decided to tell him. "It's keep secrets or keep you, huh."
"Whatever you choose, I'll be fine."
You look at Jaebeom. Sometimes, you're not sure if he actually likes you. He says considerate things like that, but you're confused if it's love or lack of fight. You are never one to settle for lackluster feelings and unclear lines.
But Jaebeom brings you comfort and satisfaction that you don't want to lose.
"Hey, if we can't figure out how to face the world," you hold his hand and gently tug him closer to you, "why don't you take me to heaven for now?"
--
Jaebeom waits for you to get up to your room and look down from your window. You lean to whisper to him. "Let's not do that again. My back is aching."
"You're the one who wanted it. I only aim to please. How do you feel? Is it bad?"
You smile to yourself. It wasn't bad-it was far from bad. If anything, it was overwhelming with all the pain and pleasure cursing through your body. But you don't regret it. You're glad to have done it with Jaebeom. "I love you."
Jaebeom's mouth drops a little. He surely isn't expecting that when he asks how you feel.
"Ain't that the worse thing to hear right now?" you snicker to yourself before pulling your glass window down, not giving him the chance to answer.
You don't have to. You learn as it happens. Jaebeom is attracted to you, and you to him, but such fleeting feeling isn't enough to ruin your brother's trust or their friendship.
You love him, you do. But some love are only for one summer, and those love are the most cruel. For they will stay with you even after the warmth is long gone. Even after the boy is back in the city forgetting you, and you're in a little town wishing the world is smaller for the two of you.
