"Jinyoung must be breaking up with me soon."
Lisa looked at you incredulously. "What kind of a stupid thought is that?"
You drank a glass of beer in one shot before replying, "He wasn't trying to argue with me the past few days! I even started purposely annoying him, but he wouldn't give me even a sneer. Is he cheating on me?"
"Jinyoung is being nice and you think he's cheating on you?"
"He has to be!" you poured yourself another glass full. "You know how we always fight because that's our way of communicating?"
"A weird way, to be honest."
"That's what we know. We started as rivals in school then we dated to prove who can love the other more. If we don't fight, we don't have anything else to do. I live for the times I want to go out on a date and he would say we can have a date at home. Then we would just spend the day reading because he's that boring, and I'll make sure he remembers that every damn time he tells me I take too long to fix my hair. Dude, you take too long choosing what book to read for the third time!"
Lisa sighed and shook her head. No one really understood how you lasted seven years dating Jinyoung when you were at each other's throat every second of the day. He was cold and selfish-you were pushy and indecisive.
"Maybe he's tired of me?" you started sobbing. Lisa handed you a tissue box. "Maybe I'm such a nagger and he didn't want to deal with it anymore."
"Why don't you ask him? I'm sure he'll tell you the truth."
"Yeah, he's casually cruel, in the name of being honest."
"Stop drinking now. You're drunk quoting Taylor Swift."
"That's going to be my theme song for Jinyoung once he breaks up with me, you know. All Too Well is basically our love story."
"You're not breaking up yet. God, just go to his house, okay? He's nearer than your home. Get it over with.
-
"What are you doing out so late at night?"
You tried to smile wide as Jinyoung greeted you with an annoyed expression. That was what you've been waiting for. For him to get mad at you again. For him to feel something for you.
But he sighed and opened his door wider. "Come in. Next time tell me if you're going to sleep over."
"Why? Are you hiding something from me?"
He pulled you inside. "No. I just wanted to know if I'll be working tonight or taking care of you."
"You don't have to take care of me. I'm not a kid."
"Whatever," he helped you out of your coat and even with your shoes when you just slumped on the chair.
Normally, Jinyoung would be angry at you for bothering him this late at night. He wouldn't go and get you a glass of water because 'it's your fault you're dizzy, suffer yourself.' But there he was, trying his best to be a good boyfriend. He was not a good boyfriend. But he was your boyfriend. Why was he changing that? What have you done?
"Hey, what's wrong with you? Why are you crying?"
He's breaking up with you. Maybe he actually has another girl now. One who listens to him and doesn't pry so much. One who respects his space. Once who doesn't insist that they act as a couple when Jinyoung blatantly said he doesn't feel comfortable being too close in public. One who would understand what he means despite his rude choice of words.
You could still remember the only time before when Jinyoung honestly did something for you. It was your college graduation, and he attended it together with your parents. He couldn't give you much time then, as he was in medical school and God knows how chaotic that place was.
But he made time to attend your graduation, albeit just to give you his gift.
"It's a couple ring. A promise ring," he said, showing you the one he was wearing. "You kept on asking me to wear couple things with you, but this is the best I can do."
The couple ring was enough to remind you that even though you fight everyday, you still promised to stay together.
Wait.
Where was your ring?
"Hey, what now? Why are you crying even harder?"
You started choking in your own tears. You must have lost it when you washed your hands while out with Lisa. But it's too late now to go back to the pub. How could you lose the only proof of Jinyoung's love for you? You were already losing the man himself.
"I don't know what's wrong with you, but do you want me to cuddle you to sleep? That's what you requested when your dog died, right? Will that make you feel better?"
Now you're remembering the old dog you got for Jinyoung. She dies because you were such a useless mother.
"Okay, that's it," you felt yourself being hoisted up. Jinyoung carried you to his bedroom and held you until you got tired of crying and dozed off.
-
You woke up with a pounding headache. You weren't in your room. You tried to remember what happened last night, and the lastest memory was Lisa telling you to go to Jinyoung's house and sort things out with him.
"You're awake? Here, I made some soup for you," Jinyoung went in the room with a tray in hand.
Jinyoung. He was breaking up with you. And you kept on losing the things he's given you. Was there anyway to save your relationship? You felt like crying again.
"Eat up. Do you want me to feed you?"
You shook your head. This was it. You're going to part ways after this. The least you could do was face it head on.
"Also, I found your ring last night. Must have rolled under the sofa. Here."
You stared at the ring he placed on your palm. You were wrong last night. He wasn't just cruel by being honest-he could be a cruel liar too.
"This is not my ring," you faced him with yet again tearstained face. "This is yours. Why are you giving this to me? Do you not want this anymore? Do you not want me anymore?"
"Wait, I was just-"
"You've changed. You don't even talk to me anymore these days. You just agree with anything I say, as if talking with me would be bothersome. Do you have someone else now? Or did you just fell out because of how horrible I am?"
"What?"
Your tears started falling on the soup. Jinyoung just sat there in silence, letting everything sink in.
He took a sharp breath and got out of the bed. He looked mad.
"God damn it."
He fished out something from his pocket.
It was a velvet box.
"I was planning to propose to you, so I've been trying not to get into a fight, but here you are thinking I'm breaking up with you?!"
You sat there dumbfounded. Jinyoung opened the box and revealed a new ring.
"I know I suck at being a boyfriend, but I never thought you would cry because of this. You said last night that you lost your ring, so I thought you'll feel better if I give you mine for now. But I got that wrong again, right?"
You nodded. How stupid of him to think you wanted the ring. What you wanted was a symbol of your love.
"So would you accept this as a symbol of my love? We don't agree all the time, but if you agree to marry me, that's the most important. Wait, why are you crying again?!"
"Because I'm going to marry you and we can fight forever now," you wailed.
Jinyoung sighed before standing up to wipe your face with the hem of his shirt. "God, and you just said you're not a kid last night? What am I going to do with you?"
"Marry me?"
Jinyoung chuckled at your puppy eyes, pouty lips. "Okay. But finish your soup first."
