"Maybe you should join a club," his teacher said. "Then you'll have an idea of what you want to do in the future."
Mark stared at his blank career plan. Since he's already at the last year of high school, he's supposed to have a course to take in mind. Their homeroom teacher made them fill up a paper with their dream school and job listed. Then they will be given advices on how to reach their dreams.
Mark didn't have a dream. He spent the past four years in high school just trying to survive. He didn't have much friends, but some of his classmates were nice enough to let him join when there are group projects.
Maybe he should have just let Jackson write on the form for him. He did hear his friend's comment about how he'll fit as an accountant or tech support-boring jobs that needs more mind than talk.
"Look out!"
Mark found the moon in his hands. It was light, a sphere made of Styrofoam, with clumsy carves and paint to resemble the moon.
When he looked up, he saw someone who he could compare to the sun instead. Eyes fully opened in shock of what has happened, holding a box of decorations and breaking a little sweat.
"I'm so sorry!" She quickly put her stuffs down and reached for the moon in Mark's hands. "Are you okay?"
Mark nodded, glancing at the box and figuring out what they were for.
"Oh, I'm from the astronomy club. Well, it used to be a club, but I'm the only member left, so it's disbanding. That's why I'm about to throw these stuffs out," the disappointment in her voice is evident.
Mark can't help but keep staring at the decorations-not sure how to make her feel better.
"Do you like the stars?"
Mark went back to looking at her face. She had a bright smile. She must be really passionate with astronomy. And Mark looking at the little golden stars must have been a hope for her.
"I guess. They're pretty," Mark said-meaning the stars.
"I know, right! They're actually much prettier through a telescope, that's why I joined the club. I didn't have one and I couldn't for the life of me assemble one. So yeah, I would use the astronomy club's telescope to my heart's content. It's really sad I have to part with it now."
"Why? Where is it going?"
"To the principal's office. He just lent it to the club, so I can't keep it."
Mark was lost for words again. He felt useless. He couldn't have saved the club from ending-he didn't want to fake enthusiasm and join. That would offend the poor girl. He also couldn't just move on and tell her it would be alright. Mark wasn't fond of giving false hopes.
"Well, that's me. Sorry for bothering you. I'm just really chatty like this. I better get going and throw this out."
"Wait-"
She stopped on her tracks before Mark could even figure out why he wanted to stop her.
Why, he asked himself, didn't he want that frown to stay on her face?
For once in his life, he felt the need to do something.
"I can help you assemble a telescope!" he blurted out without much thinking.
He didn't know how to assemble anything-much more a telescope. But his teacher did suggest to try new things, and Jackson said he's good with tricky things.
"Really?" her eyes were sparkling. They're like stars on Earth. "But why would you do that for me? We don't even know each other!"
"Because..." he didn't know. But looking at her, he just thought, "pretty."
She smiled, thinking that indeed, the stars are pretty.
But in that moment, Mark meant her. And maybe after building the telescope, he'll let her know.
