"I'm assigning Roberto to guard duty.
That's all."
One by one, we filed out the office in silence. That's how it's always been.
If they boss called for us, we'd come.
Nobody knew what he looked like,
he always sat with his back to his audience. The most someone knew about it him was that he had a daughter. And lord help them if they every think to go after her. The best of the gang were put to watch over her.
Anyone caught slipping would pay the penalty of death.
They call her the man killer.
Anyone who took interest in her always went missing. Except in my case, I didnt take liking in her. She took liking in me. She wanted a relationship and when I declined, she had me brought to her father.
That was when I learnt of the gang.
He gave me a choice, marry his daughter or watch my foster parents die in front of me.
It was clear to see what option I chose.
I haven't been initiated into the gang yet. Her father said I could officially join once I was eighteen. Around that same time would be the wedding.
I never wanted to marry Kim, but I had no choice. It didn't seem that bad at the time. But now, I had someone else I wanted to marry.
And because of me, she was chained up in the basement. I couldn't even explain why this is happening to her.
I don't know how they found out she was the girl from the library.
I kind of hinted it to Keith. He wouldn't bail on me, would he?
I could just ask him right?
If he was really my friend he'd be honest.
So I prepared my question as I made my way down to the lounge.
Most of the guys seemed to be present.
"Good job Luke!"
The compliment came from the youngest member, Roberto.
He was also the guy that the boss put to guard Amber. I envied him.
I chose not to answer him, instead I surveyed the room.
"Where's Keith?"
"He left a few minutes ago!"
I heard Gregg called out from in the kitchen.
Gregg was the live-in chef. He was also the oldest and most skilled assasin the Vipers had.
Mark and Mac were playing cards.
Simon was on his phone.
Jones and Rex were watching some kind of mafia movie.
"I heard you screwed Amber's friend sister."
I looked across the room to see Rebel leant up on the wall.
"S-"
"Roberto!"
Gregg cut me off before I could even start speaking. I decided I might as not respond. So I walked down the stairs to the bunkers.
I knew how it went with our captives.
Nobody but the person assigned to guard duty could enter their room unless special permission was granted.
The kind of special permission that Rex has gotten to use Maggie to entertain himself.
Any of the guys could request permission, and if they got it, I could do nothing to stop them.
You had to be an official member to request permission, which meant that as long as she was a captive of the Vipers, I couldn't talk to or even see her.
There was no way to fix this.
I should've distanced myself from her.
Now, she was basically dead and there was no way to possibly save her.
Her death would be my fault.
I didn't know who to call.
I could call Kent, but what would I tell him?
"Hey Kent, how you going? Just calling to tell you that your little sister is gonna die soon, see ya!"
I don't think that would work.
I didn't even know how long she was alive for. I didn't even know what Kent could even do if I tell him.
He's just a civilian in this warfare.
In the end, there was nobody to call.
I set her up. I caused her to get kidnapped. I ruined her birthday.
And now, I'm going to be the cause of the end of her life.
I couldn't just go to school tomorrow as normal. I needed to make the right move here. But before I could become more lost in thought, someone interjected.
"Dad is leaving for a while, he made sure to give me the permission to give that wretch what she deserves-"
"What do you want Kim?"
"Always quick to get to the point Luke. You're being left in charge while he's away. Depending on how well you keep the base safe, your promotion will go accordingly."
Once her sentence was finished, I heard her footsteps reced.
I laid face down into my bed and muled over todays events, as well as the past week.
It was actually going well, but apparently, all good things must come to an end.•~••~•~•~•*change in POV*•~•~•~••~•
"Hey, are you awake?"
"Wake up..."
"Hey....."
I felt myself being stirred awake. The first thing I saw was white as my eyes began to adjust to the poor lighting.
"Chef would like to know what food you prefer..."
Who was this? It was the voice of a male. But not a familiar one.
It was hesitant and shaky. As if he was afraid. After blinking my eyes open, I saw an unfamiliar face. He seemed to be younger than me, his hair cut short and his face resembling that of a baby.
Why was he here? Where am I?
Questions bombarded my mind.
However, I could deceifer the jumbled words before a sharp pain ran through my body. I noticeably winced in pain only be become baffled at the sound of chains moving.
My eyes shot open to see my hands and feet chained to an iron rod pertruding out of the concrete wall.
I was being held captive.
I was kidnapped.
But why?
"I'm sorry about that, they'll remove the chains after some time..."
The boy spoke again. Who was he?
"Who are you?"
I quizzed in confusion.
"Oh my apologies, my name is Roberto and I'm the guardian of your chamber."
He sent me a small smile but I still felt confused.
"The guardian???"
"Yes, I watch over you guys, bring you food, clean you up, take care of you until you are needed."
"Until I'm needed?"
"Until it's time for you to fulfil your purpose here in the base."
His smile started to disappear.
I felt myself begin to lose consciousness.
"What's your name?"
My eyes barely opened.
"Why should I tell you?"
I didn't really mean to snap, but I was chained to a wall and I needed answers.
"I'll answer as many questions as I can if you answer mine."
Sounds like a fair exchange. I had to be careful with what I told him.
"My name is Amber."
"Amber do you know how you got here?"
"No."
"You were kidnapped."
Well no shit sherlock.
"Why am I here?"
"Nobody really knows."
So much for his help.
"Amber you need to eat this food, and let me bathe you..."
And let him do what?
"Hell no."
"Amber I can not let you bathe yourself until I've grown to trust you... what if you try to run or kill yourself? , plus you don't even have energy to get there yourself."
"Still no."
Before he could interject I continued.
"I'll let a stranger bathe me over my dead body."
He sat and pondered for a while, then deeply sighed.
"I can't kill you to bathe you...but I can knock you out."
Before I could argue or question his statement, I felt a sudden, abrupt pain to my neck and my sight went black.
That damn Roberto.
