"Clear!"
There was shaking. Or maybe I was being shocked. I couldn't tell which was which.
My eyes wouldn't open.
My chest was aching.
My heart was beating slow and softly.
I heard somebody take a deep breathe.
Maybe it was me.
"He's breathing!"
It was me after all.
"Call Dr-"
"We can't. He's busy. He'll be here soon already."
I heard some sort of utensil being places onto a metal surface as footsteps receded.
My eyes still couldn't open.
The only thing that seemed to work was my ears.
But I was alive.
Thank goodness I was alive.
The last thing I saw as I fell to the floor was the worries faces of Kareem and Zac as Kim clutched me close to her, screaming with all her lungs.
I saw Roberto crying and Amber behind him emotionless.
I was shot and she didn't look fazed.
She was unbothered by my supposeded death.
That bullet was shot with the intent to kill.
Tyler intended to kill me.
Tyler answered to Drew.
Which meant that Drew wanted me dead.
But why?
To have Amber all to himself?
Would he kill for that?
I thought back to the time he opened the door, when he said that Amber wasn't home.
Maybe he was capable of it.
He was their leader.
Which meant that he was the vilest of them all.
Did Kent agree to having me killed?
I didn't think he would betray me like that.
But then again...I did hurt his sister.
This is what I get for trusting so easily.
What will they do when Drew finds out that I'm alive?
Would they try to kill me all over again?
They did they use a difibulator to jump start my heart if they wanted me dead?
Kent wasn't none of the guys speaking.
I'd know his voice.
It sounded like the guy I shared a blanket with. But what was his name...
My brain hurt to think.
I couldn't feel my fingers, or even my legs.
It was like I had no blood in my body at all.
There was no circulation.
So I laid there, unable to move, and listened.
Feet scampered away.
After time I heard the cringling of plastic from somewhere to the side of me.
"Damn what is all of this?"
Who was that?
Her voice was fine and hoarse.
"What is this tube even for?-
Oh! Why am I connected to this bag of...is that blood?!?"
I guess she lost a large amount of blood too.
She quieted down and I heard fumbling.
It sounded like she was taking off the tubes.
"Shit! Why is the floor so cold?"
Maybe she was trying to escape.
But why?
Didn't they tell her who they were?
Was this the first time she's woken up since they rescued her?
What time was it?
What day was it?
Voices approached quickly.
"What was that noise?"
"Bro I don't know, maybe a ghost?"
"Idiot."
"Dumbass."
"What did you say wimp?"
"Do you think she woke up?"
A door opened.
"Who the fuck are-
Cooper??? Oh my god!"
Yes. Yes. Yes.
It made a bit more sense now.
Cooper was the name of the guy I shared a blanket with at Ambers house.
There was a loud thump followed my rapid footsteps.
"Move out of the way Tom!"
"Quit shoving. She already fell."
"Douche bag."
There was some shuffling.
"Shake her a little."
Then there was ruffling.
"Wha- where am I?"
"Maggie your back at the base,"
The rescue of Maggie was a success.
But... before I went unconscious, I heard that Amber hadn't been moved.
So did they rescue her?
Was she alive?
Did Maggie lie?
"Wheres -"
She took a deep breathe.
"Amber?"
"Shes-"
Whoever was speaking was cut off by the faint ringing of my ear.
As the ringing grew fainter and fainter I felt myself drifting away from consciousness.
I wanted to know where Amber was.
But I guess I didn't deserve to.•~••~•~•~•*change in POV*•~•~•~••~•
"So, you're technically a prince."
He scratched his neck.
"I guess..."
"No no, I'm pretty sure. If you're dad runs the island then he's the governor, or king, which would make you a prince."
He looked down to his lap.
"This work isn't as simple are prince and princesses Amber. This isn't a fairytale."
That hit me right in the gut.
Why did he have to make himself look like the bad guy?
His family makes sure that everyone on Purvis gets food and proper housing.
Even if it was doing it by illegal trade.
I learnt a lot about my heritage.
Drew gave me a whole history lesson.
He told me about the great invasion of the British.
About how more than a hundred ships sailed to our shores and took charge.
About how all our books came from the British.
About how the natives tricked the soldiers and told control of all the operations from on the inside.
About how every five years, a fleet is sent out past the death zone, and only one ever returned.
The rest remain as ornaments for the sea floor.
He told me a great deal while we sipped on our hot soup.
By the time he was finished, so was our soup.
"What was your childhood like?"
I felt like he shared everything with me, maybe I should do the same.
So I did.
"My parents put me in an orphanage at birth. They took me out when I was ten. That was when I first met Kent. I entered a new middle school. The first school I ever attended. Kent was going into high school at the time. They bullied me. Then I had to move. I ended up in another school, this time I stayed there until I was about to be a sophomore. I moved again, and entered another school as a sophomore. I met Bella first. She was a pure savage. My friend group expanded a bit more with Rebecca and Marci, two sisters... but both passed away... I left them when the tide was high...and it took them...-"
I whimpered.
It was all my fault.
I killed them.
Drew pulled me to his chest.
"You don't have to say anything else-shhh"
I shook my head.
I needed someone to hear me say it out loud.
"I was blamed for their death, but their childhood friend, Hance defended me. Their death hit him long after...I was so busy thinking about myself that I neglected him to the point where he slit his wrist-"
I stopped to wipe my tears.
"He slit his wrist on the beach shore where the girls were last seen, and walked into the ocean as he bled out."
I didn't bother to wipe my tears anymore.
"The next person I met was Lucy... her mother died from cancer a few days before I came to spend time with my mother. I didn't even console her before I left. I didn't even tell her that I was leaving. The last friend I made was Cara... coming from a family of thirteen she had it hard. It made her ensecure and somewhat needy. Her parents refused to care of the child that she had prematurely made for a guy that gave her all the attention in the world, until he heard that she was pregnant. I left her behind too, without a word. I came up here to the west to start over. It hasn't been going well so far."
He looked at me.
"Thank you."
I didn't know what he was thanking me for, but as he pulled me closer to his chest, I wasn't very interested in finding out.
Nothing seemed to matter as citrus engulfed me.
