Silence.
That was what I woke up to.
You would think I would've grown accustomed to that by now.
But something was different.
For starters, Roberto didn't stick around after unlocking the bathroom.
He even brought us food so he wouldn't have to come back during the day.
He shackled our feet back to the chains on the wall and left. Just like that.
We could tell that something was bothering him. It was plain as day.
Maggie and I even stayed up during the rest of the day just to see if he'd walk through that door sporting his goofy smile.
We kept ourselves entertained with cards until we became hungry.
Then we turned our attention to the plate of dry toast.
Some thing was surely wrong.
He blatantly ignored our attempts to converse with him.
He was as cold as the granite floor.
Aside from his moodiness, the bed was also unusually uneven.
Usually, Maggie's side would be equally weighed down as my side so the bed would be even.
But it wasn't.
Which could only mean that Maggie wasn't on the bed.
I willed this possibility away as I slowly opened by eyes.
Only to see what I attempt to will away.
Maggie was gone.
Her side was unmade, her pillow casted in the floor and her foot shackles discarded near the base of the bed and a trial of blood splatters lined the way straight to the door and probably all the way to where ever they took her.
How could I not hear them take her?
Where did they take her?
Who took her?
Why did they take her?
I had far too many questions compared to answers. I felt my head grow fuzzy.
Quickly, I opened the bag I was using as a pillow and took out my medicine.
I popped the pills into my mouth and swallowed them dry.
Their size only made it excruciatingly painful.
I needed a clear head to think this through.
Did they take her because they needed the information?
But why now?
Did they take her to abuse her?
Probably.
Did they take her to free her?
Big doubt.
If they needed information why didn't they take her yesterday? Or the day before?
Why now? Did something happen?
Something so dire that they needed that information so badly?
Was my turn next?
Will they take me in?
But what did I know?
Definitely not chemistry.
I didn't even know my purpose.
Was it to stay here and rot.
Probably.
Only time will tell.
But with every bone in my body I wished Roberto to open that door right then and there. I wished for him to give me all the answers I wanted, all the answers I needed.
I counted the seconds.
Fifteen.
Twenty-four.
Thirty seven.
Forty two.
Fifty nine.
"Amber?"
Huh?
I opened my eyes to see that my wish had come true, well part of it anyway.
Fingers were crossed for the other half.
"They took her?"
He nodded. Well that was a good start.
"They need information?"
Another nod.
"They'll come for me soon?"
Another dreadful nod.
"Why?"
He sighed.
"Kim granted visiting rights Rex and Rebel,"
Wish completely granted.
That was pretty much all the answers I needed.
I knew who took her.
I knew why they took her.
I knew that they would be coming for me soon.
All because Roberto came back.
One thing still bothered me.
"Why did you leave us?"
He looked pained.
"I was commanded to not converse with the captives unless completely necessary..."
That command had Kim written all over it.
But why?
She already had Luke...why would she put Roberto on such a short leash?
The whole point of making us comfortable was for us to give them information.
But by taking Maggie, they contradicted everything that they promised.
They would pay for whatever they did to Maggie.
When Kim gets what's coming to her, not even Luke will be able to save her.•~••~•~•~•*change in POV*•~•~•~••~•
"Luke, NO."
"Bu-"
"You totally disregarded my instructions and went along your merry way, barely turning up for school at all!"
She continued before I could pour gasoline onto the fire.
"Imagine my shock to receive two calls from your principal. One before lunch saying you didn't turn up and one after saying you finally did. My buffoon of a husband neglected to mention that he hadn't indeed dropped you off to school like I told him to."
Gina sent a firey glance in James' direction but luckily he was saved by the kitchen wall as he prepared forgiveness lunch.
I was totally grounded.
It only made it worst that today was Saturday.
Kim has been calling me since yesterday.
Zac left me some messages and Rex sent me a photo of a beaten up Maggie.
The latter was more worrying than the former. I didn't know if the photo was recent. I could only hope not.
I didn't know if Amber was being held with Maggie.
I also didn't know if Amber was in a similar condition.
Fear for another picture being sent caused me to turn off my phone.
James had to repent to Gina.
Which meant that normally I would be sent to my room but on this dire occasion, James would probably need the entire house... if you know what I mean.
Fingers crossed, I walked up to my room and entertained myself.
Randomly I found myself gazing at the window, or more correctly, Ambers window.
I had a strong urge to crawl across.
So that was what I did.
Fortunately, I found her window open, for some reason it felt like I might have opened it myself.
Her room laid untouched except for the missing clothes in the closet.
Downstairs, the table was filled with gifts that seemed to be unopened.
A wave of memories hit me.
I realized once again just how much I ruined her birthday, and her life.
I walked back upstairs and went back through the window.
Once I was back downstairs I found James and Gina making out. Awkward.
They broke apart quickly and James spoke up.
"You can go to your friends place for the day... be back by 8pm. Your ban starts at 8:05pm sharp."
I cracked a smile. He bought me 12 hours.
Best dad ever.
I sped over to the base.
Kim was eagerly awaiting my arrival.
She took me up to her room.
"what's going on Kim?"
"Some of the guys were grabbed...the abductors are asking for fifty thousand per head..."
Wait what? Someone was stupid enough to take some of our members and call a ransom?
"Who did they take?"
"Simon, Mac and Jones,"
Easy pickings.
"Who did you hear this from?"
"Rex witnessed it and brought us the letter they left behind,"
"And it said..?"
"It had the ransom amount, the meeting place and the time of the meeting along with the condition for their safe release,"
"The condition....?"
"One person alone must come with the money."
That's bull. They could easily already killed our guys and turn up emptyhanded, then they could kill whoever we sent and took the money.
"We can't do that..."
" I know, that's why....."
"Thats why what?"
"I wanted you to put together a team to get our guys..."
"Why me? Why not Rebel or Rex?"
"Rebel is busy with interrogation and Rex is not a leader or team player... he wants to go in alone,"
"But why me?"
"My father left you in charge,"
"But I have a family, plus I'm grounded after 8pm,"
I started towards the door.
"Luke nothing good will come from walking away from this."
"Your the gang leaders daughter, deal with it."
I left the base and went straight back home after picking up two lattes and a burger for James.
I had to be there for my family.
I had no intend on being part of Kim's just so soon.
When that bridge comes, I'll cross it.
