"You may now kiss the bride."
I looked over at my new stepbrothers who were all looking down. I knew what this meant and they did too. We were now siblings and were probably going to live together.
They would be gaining a new stepsister they had only met once and didn't really like while I now had four stepbrothers who hated me and two decently nice stepbrothers. My life seemed to have been flipped upside down.
Was this some sort of unreleased episode of Shameless or something?
I already had a mom in prison and now this? My mornings were about to get a lot tougher.
All too soon the ceremony was over and the after party was in full swing. I was standing at the side, not really doing anything, when Cole came over, followed by three boys and one girl.
"Hey, Lila," he smiled. I nodded in response, waiting for him to introduce the people with him. "These are my cousins. This is Ethan, Joe, and Zach." The boys all smiled at me, something which caused me to relax slightly. "And this," Cole continued, pointing to the girl standing next to Ethan, "Is Lexi. She's."
"Hi, I'm Lila, the stepsister. Nice to meet you," I grinned.
His cousins seemed quite friendly and I noticed that all four were smiling happily at me, making me hope that we might get along.
LILA
For the rest of the afternoon and evening, I found I was spending more time with my stepbrother's cousins than my actual stepbrothers. Especially Lexi. It was nice to spend time with a girl that didn't stick their tongue down my dad's mouth every five minutes.
I found that I was getting along quite well with them. The boys joked around and Lexi was super sassy but kind. So far, they hadn't asked for details about my life which I was grateful for. I didn't really want to dictate to them my autobiography.
I'd had quite a few people come up to meet me, and honestly, I felt like I was at the Brits after party or something. I was famous.
Sadly, one of those people was Jayden.
"Hi," my stepbrother greeted, coming to lean back against the wall we were stood by, beer in hand.
"Nice suit. I reckon I could sell it for at least 50 cents on ebay," I smiled politely, eyeing his actually extremely fancy outfit.
"Whatever. At least I don't look like a walking piece of candyfloss," he retorted with a scowl.
"I don't mind that. I like candyfloss. Speaking of which, I'm off to the desserts table," I smiled as sweetly as I could, pulling back from the conversation and striding over to the empty table.
There it was. The love of my life. Ice cream. After all, that was the best thing to have when you wanted to feel like a gen z teen right? Just like eat away all your problems with ice cream.
Dumping a large portion of it into a polystyrene bowl, I prepared for my shitty metabolism to leave me regretting it in the morning, but I honestly didn't care as I shovelled a forkful into my mouth.
Best part of the wedding, hands down.
"Leave some for the rest of us," a voice chuckled beside me as Logan appeared by my side, plucking a brownie from the plate in front of us.
"Can't make any promises," I said, completely seriously, already having almost finished the entire bowl.
Come on, you're missing out on all the fun, Logan laughed, placing the half of his brownie down on a napkin and taking my bowl of ice cream from me.
"Hey!" I exclaimed indignantly, barely having time to relax before he was dragging me closer to the middle of the room where everyone was happily dancing to a live band.
I couldn't dance for the life of me, so I settled with just grinning and jumping up and down to the beat, actually feeling happy.
Maybe this whole wedding thing wasn't going to be so bad after all.
LILA
The wedding had finished up, most of the guests had filtered out of the building, and the only people left were my stepbrothers, Jessica, dad and I.
I decided to waste my time avoiding them, especially seeing as most of the older one's were absolutely wasted and I was happier scrolling through twitter.
"Did you enjoy tonight?" a voice asked, causing me to glance up and see Mason.
"Surprisingly, yeah. And I wasn't too anti social either. Good food too to be honest."
"Did you try any of the meringues? I made them myself. Half of them were eaten on the way here but, you know, got to make sure they're not poisonous or anything," Mason chuckled.
"I did, actually. They were really nice. I've made meringues once before, but I overcooked them, and ended up almost setting fire to the house," I smiled, reflecting back on that chaotic time.
"Well maybe you can make some with me at some point. Learn how to do it without 911 needing to be called," Mason suggested, sounding quite hopeful.
Oh yeah. We were all going to be living together. Yay.
"Sounds good to me," I grinned.
"Hey! You two! Get your arses over here!" a voice yelled from across the hall, where Logan was stood, mop in hand.
"Oh no. My legs have stopped working. Guess I'll have to sit this one out. What a tragedy," I sighed, happily reclining further back against my seat.
"What a shame. Means you'll be able to do some sitting down jobs like the washing up, tho," Mason smiled brightly, pushing himself to his feet before holding his hand out to me.
With a lot of mental strain, I forced myself to sit upright, before gripping onto my stepbrother's hand.
I was yanked to my feet with an unexpected amount of energy, and I found myself almost tripping over my feet as I attempted to steady myself.
"The hoover's waiting for you."
