A/n - this chapter shows Severus' perspective through the protection of Lily and James.
Snape walked into a dark and murky room. A long black table spread the length of the room and Death Eaters of all ages were standing surrounding it. At the top of the table was a pale figure drenched in dark, black cloaks. A hood hid his face, but there was no question about who was underneath it. "My Lord, there is a Prophecy right from Trelwaneys mouth. It states, the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches, born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies, and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not. And either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives. The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies."
Lord Voldemort spun around to face Snape, anger spread across his face. "A young boy, will be my down fall? Who would have the power to do such a thing? I am the darkest wizard ever! No one can defeat me, for I will defeat him first! I want the names of every boy born in September, immediately!"
A platinum blonde haired boy stepped forward, "There are two of which this could apply, the Longbottoms and The Potters." Snapes head snapped up and his eyes narrowed as he looked to Lucius. The Potters? Lily? His mind raced with worry as he thought about the grave danger she would be in. "The Longbottoms could never, they lack the ability. But, Lily and James Potter. They have great power and I'm sure their son does too. Bellatrix!" Voldemort called, instantly the dark curly haired woman emerged from the crowd, she looked nervous being spoken to directly by the Dark Lord. "I want you to get the location of the Potters from the Longbottoms. Take whatever means necessary, I want them gone immediately! All of them, mother, father and child. All must go!"
"Albus, you have a visitor." Dumbledore turned to see Professor Mcgonagall standing in the doorway of his office, Severus Snape at his side. He nodded indicating for Mcgonagall to let him pass, she allowed the boys in and returned to her lesson. "What do you want Severus?" Dumbledore said shortly, turning back to his desk. "Please, you need to help me." Severus said rushed, clearly panicked. Dumbledore shook his head as he tidied his desk. Severus was growing annoyed at the lack of interest Dumbledore was showing.
"Albus! Listen to me!" Severus cried, finally catching the full attention of Dumbledore. "Lily is in trouble and you need to help hide her. I can't lose her as well as Silver. She's the last person I love alive." By this point, he was completely out of breath and gripping his want tightly as he panted. A flash of white reflected across the room narrowly missing Snape, causing him to drop to his knees and his wand to fly from his hand. "Don't kill me."
"That was not my intention." Dumbledore spoke, standing over him, his wand tip illuminating his face. "Well, Severus? What message does Lord Voldemort have for me?" Snape shook his head immediately, desperation on his face. "No - no message - I'm here on my own account!" Snape was wringing his hands: he looked so defeated, his dark, greasy hair flying around his face in the wind. "I - I come with a warning - no, a request - please -" Dumbledore flicked his wand and instantly the breeze stopped and silence fell. "What request could a Death Eater have for me?" Dumbledore said eyeing Snape suspiciously.
"The - the Prophecy ... the prediction...Trelawney..." Dumbledore nodded, a small sarcastic chuckle leaving his lips. "Ah, yes. How much did you relay to Lord Voldemort?" Snape looked to the ground, guilt growing in his eyes. "Everything - everything I heard! That is why - it is that reason - he thinks it means Lily Evans!" Dumbledore rolled his eyes, growing annoyed by the mans antics. "The prophecy did not refer to a woman. It spoke of a boy born at the end of July."
"You know what I mean! He thinks it means her son, he is going to hunt them down, kill them all. They killed Silvers best friend, they kill Silver, I can't let them kill Lily too. I let them kill Silver, you can't let them kill Lily." Dumbledore straightened up and looked the boy in the face. "If she means that much to you, surely Lord Voldemort will spare her? Could you not ask for mercy for the mother, in exchange for the son." Snape shook his head, tears now in his eyes. "I've asked him. I asked him to spare Silver and Ivy and now Lily, but he refuses." Dumbledore looked down at him, a scornful look on his face. "You disgust me, you do not care, then, about the deaths of her husband and child? They can die, as long as you have what you want?" Snape said nothing but just looked up at Dumbledore, a pleading look on his face. "Hide them all, then. Keep her - them - safe. Please."
"And what will you give me in return, Severus?" Snape paused for a moment looking back at the man. "Anything. Please, think of Silver. She lost her life from my stupidity, don't let Lily die for the same reason." Dumbledore sighed and nodded, Severus let out a sigh of relief and dropped to his knees. "You will give The Order information, any information that passes the mouth of Lord Voldemort will be reported back to me. In return, I will help protect the girl." Snape looked to Dumbledore, his eyes filled with pain before he nodded slowly, he would do anything to protect the girl he loves, whether she loved him back or not.
Months passed and Voldemort grew restless. He was constantly on edge, anger and worry consumed him.The morning of 31 October 1981 came quickly, the Death Eaters had gathered for a progress report. "My Lord?" A squeaky voice rose from the dark corners of the room. Voldemort whipped around, his wand gripped tightly in his hand. Other Death Eaters turned to see Peter Pettigrew looking up at the Dark Lord, a small smile playing on his lips. Snape looked at him in shock, he had never noticed the quiet boy before. What could he possibly be here for? Snape gripped his wand in a sudden thought of an unknown attack on them. But instead, Peter looked to the man. Voldemort looked back down at him, fury on his face for being spoken to without being addressed.
"What is it, Wormtail?" He demanded shortly, Peter stepped forward gingerly and looked down at the mans feet. "I can give you the Potters." Voldemorts face lit up as he looked down at the mousy boy. "You can, what?" He demanded, excitement growing in his eyes. "They made me secret keeper. I can give you the location of their hiding house, my Lord."
"At least one of you incompetent followers have a use. Wormtail, where are they? Tell me now! I want to know now!" Peter smiled slightly, but kept his gaze at the ground, not wanting to disturb his masters mood. "Godrics Hollow, my Lord. They are hidden in a small cottage, I can lead you to it." Voldemort immediately grabbed his wand and Peters arm and disappeared from the room. Murmurs raised from the room as various Death Eaters disapparated back to their homes in preparation to celebrate.
Snape sunk to the ground, he couldn't bring himself to believe one of their best friends had betrayed them. He had risked his life for months and now this little rat had ruined everything. This disgusting, dirty, no good rat is causing the death of the last person he loved. He quickly grabbed his wand and travelled to Godric's Hollow but the damage was already done.
