Chapter 18: Life is screwed up, "Duh"

ALEX POV
"Shhhh, get down and keep quite", I said in a whisper to her, I could see her eyes widen in fear and I just hope that the darkness of forest hide us from their view and we could slip away quietly.

As we both lay in the ground listening to the foot steps coming closer, I heard one man saying" I think they are still going in the east direction there is a town ahead"
The second one said"Yeah lets go, we missed them and if he finds out, he is going to have our heads for dinner"

They all went ahead missing us just for a half mile difference, as we heard the footstep fade away we both took a breath of relief.

"I think we should go back towards the road", Haya whispered.

"Yeah, you are probably right",I said.

"Am I not always?", she said. She still haven't lost her sarcastic remarks good to know.

I just shrugged "We can debate on this matter later right now we need to get out from here"

"Right", we both walked quietly but quickly to the way back, praying all the while that they keep heading towards east.

After some hours we saw the clearing and the back of the gas station, we both were exhausted and hungry, as the first ray of sun broke trough the sky, I looked at her and she looked worse than me.

"Haya, stay here, I am going to the cafe okay"

"Okay", she said quietly.

I went inside the cafe keeping my head low, the guy at the counter was warming up the coffee machine and as I got near he looked at me and said "Bro, It will take 15 mins for this baby to get going"

"I dont mind waiting", I ordered two coffees and some bagels and donuts and then asked him if I could use his phone as I lost mine and first he eyed me up skeptically and then gave me his phone, I dialed Jake number, he wasn't picking up and call was going to voice mail, that ass must be asleep but I kept trying, I was desperate I needed to take haya to a safe location, It wouldn't take long for those hounds to realize that we didnt make it to the town. after a while he picked up.

"Who is this?", He said in a sleepy voice.

"Its me Alex"

"No shit, where the hell are you man? your dad is going nuts trying to find you"

"I cant be found Jake, am with haya she is in danger, I need your help"

"Yeah, whats wrong?"

"I dont have time to tell you the details but you need to come and pick us up", then I told him our location and made him promise that he wouldn't call my dad.

I took the coffee and the food to haya, we hide behind the dumpster again and eat our food silently, we finished it quickly as we both were hungry as a bear.

"Thanks", haya said.

"Your welcome, I called jake he is coming to pick us up"

"Okay"

"Why are you so quite?", I asked her, I just wanted to know what was going in the pretty head of hers.

"Seriously you are asking me that, we are up for almost 24 hours and am tired and am so frustrated right now, you could say am mad at the universe"

I laughed, "Life is screwed up"

"Duh"

"Just, relax we will be in a safe location soon, I wouldnt let anything bad happen to you"

"Why are you doing this?"

"Doing what?"

"Being so not you", She said in a confused voice, like she is trying to untangle something complicated.

"Now you are confusing me"

"I mean look at you, for the last 24 hours you are trying to be a guy you are not, no offence Alex but trying to protect a girl isnt your thing and I know because I heard a lot about you and it just doesn't make any sense"

"It doesn't have to make sense haya, yes helping others is not my thing but that doesnt mean am a cold hearted person"

"You are a mystery Alex", she said with a smile.

"And you are a beautiful lady and am honoured to be your knight in shinning armour", I said and winked at her and she start laughing.

"Have you looked in a mirror lately, your perfect hairs are a mess and you look like a homeless beggar right now my knight in shinning armour"

"Did you heard me complain about your condition, huh but you have to make fun of me for your information you look worse then me, I said trying to look deeply hurt but inside I was laughing cux in all of this messed up situation she was finally trusting me.

"Awww poor baby", she said grinning.

and I pulled her cheeks, I just couldn't help myself, she became red as a rose.

"That hurts you know", she said looking shy.

"Sorry", I said not sounding sorry a bit.

We heard a car pull up Jake couldn't be here this soon, I peaked and It was some family stopping for gas and food after that we stayed quite so we wouldn't be found, haya and I doused off and on but we were both tense and uncomfortable for a nap as the evening approach Jake finally arrived.

"God, you both look like crap", he said as we sit in the car.

"Yeah, and we feel like crap", I said as I put on my seat belt. Haya lay down in the back seat and went to sleep instantly and I could use a nap too.

"Dude, what happened to both of you?"

"Just shut up and drive, take us to your dads farm house once we get there I will explain everything", then I curled up in my seat and closed my eyes embracing the darkness of sleep.
