The cold, bitter wind bit at my fingers, my cheeks and my nose. My legs felt numb, and my brain was drunken on exhaustion. But I couldn't stop now. The stupid vampire didn't know what was coming. The stupid vampire that I had trusted, I reminded myself.

If I had known that Noah was a vampire, I might not have allowed him to hang around me. If I had known that he was dangerous, I might not have allowed him to be friends with me. And if I had known he was going to kill my sister, I might not have allowed him to even speak to me.

But who am I kidding? The stupid vampire had been my best friend. And maybe more, if we had been given more time.

But then he attacked my little sister when I had left the room. I remember stepping back into the kitchen to find him stuck to  her neck like a fat leach.

Madeline's eyes were glued to the floor in a literal dead gaze. And Noah had let her crumble to the floor, dead forever.

When I had first looked into his face, I thought I had seen a shimmer of guilt flash by like an ocean wave. But now whenever I think of that, I tell myself that it was all planned. He was going to let me think it was all an accident.

But I wasn't going to fall for that. Tonight, I was going to finally avenge her. He was going to die.
