As we walked through the forest to the deeper, darker and dangerous areas, I could hear Jade shivering lightly next to me. She had wrapped her own jumper around her shoulder to stop the bleeding. I was barely affected my the smell.
With Jade standing beside me, and the wolves guiding us at a steady pace, it took all of my strength to push Jade away from the wolves, as they were obviously not the safest animal to be around. But I knew that if I did this, Jade would either take it the wrong way and think I was attempting to murder her, or perhaps the wolves would see it as an excuse to kill me.
Jade was still shivering as I wrapped my jacket around her, expecting her to attack me. Instead she took it gratefully, even though confusion was plastered over her face.
"Sometimes I don't feel the cold," I stated factually. "You know, freaky vampire talent."
Jade rolled her eyes as she walked.
"You're still not forgiven," She answered quietly. "I don't care about your stupid excuses. You can keep them to yourself. If you think you are forgiven all because I stood between you and literal death, you are wrong."
Her tone was lighter than the first time she had spoken tonight, however.
"I know." I whispered. "And I don't expect you to listen, but if you would just let me explain that-"
Jade stopped moving.
"No," Jade said, cutting me off. "Let me explain something to you. You don't get to kill innocent people, let alone children and get away with it. My sister was the only person I had left. My foster parents were misunderstanding and my parents themselves, are, as you know, dead. So good luck explaining anything to me, Mister."
The wolves tilted their heads, the sign of pure confusion, yet kept on walking, as we did. I stared at the leafy ground, understanding where her anger had boiled from.
"My parents are dead, too," I said at last. "Killed in a car crash. I was there as well."
Jade was silent for a long time.
"What happened?" She asked, quietly.
"A traveler found our car wreck," I explained in a low tone. "Or at first I thought it was a traveler. At the time it didn't cross my mind that the man could have been a lone vampire, lured in by the smell of blood. He could see that my parents were dead, yet did not tell me. He asked me if I wanted to live, and I had said yes. I didn't understand why we were exchanging blood at first, but once I was asleep in the back of the now broken car, I dreamed of what I was to become. When I woke, I found that I was in the hospital. The nurse explained what happened with my parents, and the only thing the hospital did to me was stitch up a bloody leg. And here I am, today."
Jade was silent, in deep thought.
