I watched Enzion and Partius discuss something, trying to pick up any signs of danger or violence that might radiate off of Partius. I also tried to pick up on any signs of fear coming from Enzion, but all I could find was confusion.
I had to wait at least five minutes before Enzion finally came back.
"He wants to join us," He sighed. "He probably doesn't even know why we're here."
I smiled. "How about this. If you let him join, then I will do all of the talking."
I had won the power of persuasion from my mother. It wasn't an actual power, but sometimes it felt like one. It was as if I was letting all of my hidden emotions flood into my words which then built a bubble of reassurance around the person I was trying to persuade.
But it didn't have the same effect on Enzion.
"I agree with Phoenix on this one," Noah had said when Enzion had glanced at him.
"Fine," Enzion mumbled, looking sick to his stomach. "Deal."
Once he had left again, Noah looked towards me, curiosity burning in his eyes.
"You don't trust Partius, do you?" He asked, his voice a bare whisper.
"My father once told me something that happens to be a well known piece of advice as well as a good one," I explained, keeping my voice low. "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer."
When Enzion had come back tailed my Partius, we all exchanged quick greetings.
"Funny how you followed in my footsteps," Partius announced, a weak smile painted on his face as he spoke to Enzion. "That had been truly unexpected. My goody-two-shoes of a brother deciding to run away? It's almost ironic."
Enzion was quiet, a single eyebrow slightly raised. "What do you mean?" He asked.
"Let me sum it up for you," Partius sighed. "There has to have been a reason for why you ran away. So why was it?"
"Oh, he didn't run away from his problems like you did," I informed him, his attention finally set on me. "Our father happens to be dead, but it would be very unlike you to care for anybody but yourself. It wouldn't even keep you up at night knowing that your old home was burnt down, and that the pack in the West had declared war."
It took a moment for Partius to reply.
"Phoenix, Phoenix, Phoenix," He tutted. "I always thought that you were the smart one."
"I am," I growled. "And as the smart one, I advised our new Alpha to allow you to join, and I am sure he would listen if I advised him to kick your butt out of here."
Partius laughed coldly. "Are you really the smart one? Haven't you figured it out yet?"
Suddenly, it dawned on me. I gasped.
"No, no, no. This is so wrong," I whispered. "This means... This means that Partius is actually the new Alpha."
