I understood why everybody hated me. Yes, I was a vampire. Was that it, though? Was that the only reason?
As we walked, Enzion watched over Phoenix protectively. Every time she strayed to far ahead, Enzion would whistle a single note, as if it were their secret language that was meant for only their ears.
Phoenix produced a bag from her dress pocket and began to fill it with wild, purple berries.
"Why is she collecting them?" I heard Jade ask Enzion.
"Because they are a key ingredient is some of her potions," Enzion replied. "Her mother had a bookshelf full of books that had all kinds of potions, so whenever she sees an ingredient that comes from the book, she gathers it."
"What do you mean by 'her mother'? I asked, surprised. "Isn't she your mother, too?"
Enzion frowned, his hands tucked away in his pockets. But when he saw my face filled with confusion, he lifted up his head and smiled at me. He didn't seem to hate vampires as much as he let on.
"No, She wasn't," Enzion mumbled. "My mother died when I was born. My father quickly remarried and had a happy seven years of marriage. Until his new wife passed away when Phoenix was seven."
We walked on in silence. Phoenix seemed to sense the mood change and kept herself quiet.
However, around two minutes later, Phoenix clapped her hands in excitement. A large shack sat it's self before her.
"We're here!" She announced, smiling. She took a few steps forward before opening the smooth wooden door.
Phoenix gathered a battery-powered lamp and set it on top of the table. She invited us all in, closing the door behind us.
Phoenix reached for something on top of a shelf, and presented us with a small cardboard box. When she opened the box, tiny little jars full of liquids and creams were stashed inside of it. Most of the them were clear or white, but a few had stranger colors such as black and blue.
Phoenix examined one of the labels carefully, before opening the container. It was a beige color and as she lathered some of it on a small cotton ball, she looked up at Jade.
"I do need to warn you, human. This may feel a little different from your usual medicines and creams," Phoenix informed Jade, before reaching for her shoulder.
